House nnpibcrs pointed for 5 cents
each at Ben Small's, El Psbo street.
J. S. Jops, who has for some time past
been employed here by the Southern Pa-
cific as caller, is wanted here by a trusting
friend. The friend worked in the shops
and he cashed Jops' time slip for the sum
of $77. But when the pay train arrived
Jops bad prepared another time slip ami
had it cashed before the friend could
reach the pay car. The groat financier
tlien%kipped for parts nnkriovfrn.
The Hej^ld .tried in, v,ain last eveqipg
to publish tibials of our nine interviews
of republicans which appeared in Sun-
day's Times, Xo denials were obtaina-
ble, they were but affirmations of what
this paper represented, except that Mr.
E, C. Roberts wanted to correct his, lan.
guage to read "one of the best," instead
of "the best," and W. M. James wanted
to be understood as discussing only dent1
ocratic candidates.
House numbers 5 cents each at Ben
Small's El Paso street.
Today Judge Townsend will establish
a couuty convict road camp about five
tyilcs down the valley, on the new Ysleta
road. He has 21 county convicts now at
work on the road.
The county commissioners' court will
meet on the 18th instant.
An old man named Dalton, who several
days ago armed himself with a sword
knife and proceeded to stir up the camp
of the Spanish Oil company, was before
Justice McKie yesterday, and pleaded
guilty to the chargr of having declared
war un the oil company, and was sent up
for eleven days.
The agent for the Champion road ma
chine will be here on the 15th to test the
new machine purchased by this county.
Judge Townsend wants the public to
witness the test.
Next Saturday ni^ht two local sluggers.
Sheen and Becker will tight to a finish at
the Pavillion for $100 a side.
Ben Small will paint you a number fori
five cents.
•J. B. Dedory, who is well known in j
this city, died of heart disease at Cor-j
rilitos last week. The news of his
death never reached El Paso until vaster-5
day. |
Harry Mayoard, the fancy, is in San j
Antonio doing the reporters and corres-
pondents of that city for whole columns of
advertising by telling them that he is
there in the interest of the Sullivan-Kil-
rain managers, for the purpose of di^
covering a desirable place near that city
for the Sullivan^Kilrain picnic. May
nard gave the same Bong and dance in El
Paso, but left here for the ostensible
purpose of running a theatrical party.
Five cents will buy a number lot your
house at Ben Small's, El Paso street.
Owing to a slight inaccuracy in the
published proceeding of the democratic
meeting a} the city hall on Thursday
last, some doubt has existed as to wheth-
er the meeting called for tonight would
nominate a ticket. Reference to chair-
man Newman's call, in another colunm,
will show that the object of tonight's
meeting is to "discuss the advisability
of placing a democratic ticket in the
field." Since the call was made party
opinion has crystalized anil it may now
be said that tonight's meeting will call a
democratic convention to nominate a
ticket.
There was a strong political meeting
at Wood's hall last night. It was an as
Bemblage of the colored republican voters
of El Paso and a small sprinkling of the
whites. The meeting lesolutfcd to be on
deck at the different wards on 'lection
day. Several oratorical guns were fired
off during the meeting.
Next month the court house, which is so
quiet this week, will be alive with liti-
gation. The district, county and United
States courts will all be in session.
Among the passengers who came in on
the Southern Pacific and were transferred
at the wreck yesterday afternoon were
M. Noyes and wife, Chicago: Mrs. G. E.
Botsford and daughter, Bridgeport Con-
necticut; Miss Jennie E. Clark, Brooklyn,
and Q. F. Oatman and wife, Illinois.

Our Flat*.
The plaza, or the city park, will be a
thing of beauty when smiling May has
brushed away the bright tears of April.
Under the skillful touch of Mr Sam
Ecker's hand it iB undergoing a pleasing
transformation and will present a lovely
picture when nature puts on the finishing
touches of color. Mr. Ecker has over
one hundred roses set out along the
walks ; the trees have been trimmed to
cluster, and 25 elms, 25 poplars, 200 ger-
aniums, thirty varieties of roses and
twenty white Jessamines, all for the plaza,
are now coming. Mr. Ecker never does
things by halves. But our citizens should
not allow him to bear all the expenses of
keeping up the plaza. He receives but a
small amount from the city to expend
on it.
