B. F. AVERY & SONS, Dallas, Texas.
Washington, Nov. 30.—The
president is not satisfied with the
plan of autonomy proposed by
Spain. A cabinet officer is au
thority for this statement, lie
says that something much more
liberal was expected.
When General Lee went oack to
Cnba it was with instructions
from the president to exercise his
influence with the insurgents to
induce them to accept autonomy.
The president felt that this coun-
try, through General Lee, might
be of considerable help in hasten-
ing the end of the war on a basis
of home rule. But he was looking
forward to an announcement from
Spain which wculd be in keeping
with the state department and
Madrid governmeht. The plan as
now promulgated is not what
here the Athenaeum is but keep-
ing the motto of the Y. M. C. A.,
"Nothing but the best is good
enough for Gainesville."
Next Friday night, December 3
the Athenaeum will have an uu
usually interesting program to
which the public, and especially
tbe literati of the city, are cor
dially invited. The program will
embrace music, interesting debate
and a scientific lecture by Sauta-
nelli. Through the courtesy of
Mr. Paul Gallia the Y. M. (J. A
now has about 500 chairs, so no
one need stay away tor lack of
room.
Jnst opened at George Y. Bird's
store thirteen dozen youth's and
children's suits, and four dozen
ladies' black capes, all of which
will be closed out at a bargain.

farther than any previous propo

Whether this failure to meet his
expectations will cause any change
in the president's policy remains
to be seen. It is
ever, by members
that he will express his dissatis-
faction and urge the necessity of
more liberal concession^.
That congress will early give
government's relation to it is con

to come up to promises.
