Gainesville and her people. This
is in vivid contrast to the con-

We are glad of one thing the

Our City's Indebtedness.
Some people will insist that
Gainesville is in debt too deeply
to pay out easily. Those people
do not examine the records.
Gainesville is less in debt than
any city of its size in the state.
Auditor Snider showed us the
books yesterday and a condensed
statement he had made out of the
city's liabilities aud resources.
We give the following:

Leaves $ 67 640
As the total indebtedness of the
city.
The taxable property of the city
last year was $3,561,435.
Thus we see our indebtedness
is lees than 2 per cent, of the tax-
able values.
For this indebtedness we have
to show our city hall, four brick
school houses, calaboose, bridges,
culverts, etc. We do not mean to
say that all the money for which
we owe went into these things,
' or that a good part of the cost of
them has not already been paid.
But this statement shows that the
city is not badly in debt, and that
a tax rate as high as some cities
have would pay off every cent ol
it in one year.
The bonds bear 6 per cent,
which makes our interest rate
$4350 per year. We oonld not
pay rent on the public buildings
A Pore Baking Powder.
A baking powder that can be
depended upon to Be free from
lime and alum is a desideratum in
these days of adulterated food.
So far as can be judged from the
official reports, the "Royal"' seems
to be the only one yet found by
chemical analysis to be entirely
without one or the other of these
substances, and absolutely pure.
This, it is shown, results from
the exclnssive use by its manu-
facturers of cream of tartar speci-
ally refined and prepared by pat-
ent processes which totally re-
move the tartrate of lime and
other impurities. The cost of this
chemically pure cream of tartar is
much greater than any other, and
it is used in no baking powder ex-
cept the "Royal," the manufactur-
ers of which control the patents
under which it is refined.
Dr. Edward G. Lore, formerly
analytical chemist for the United
8tates government, who made the
analysis for the New York state
board of health in their investiga-
tion of baking powders, and
whose intimate knowledge of the
ingredients of all those sold in
this market enables him to speak
authoritatively, says of the pur-
ity, whole8omeness, and superior
quality of the "Royal:"
"I find the Royal baking powder
composed of pure and wholesome
ingredients. It is a cream of
tartar powder, and does not con-
tain either alum or phospates, or
other injurious substance."
Prof. Love's teste, and the re-
cent official tests by both the
United States and Canadian gov-
ernments, show the Royal baking
powder to be seperior to all
