KVLU tryouts to be held
4Salute To The Golden Days of Radio9 set
KVLU will hold auditions
for its third annual “Salute
to the Golden Days of
Radio” at 7 p.m. Wednesday
and Thursday, program
director Darrell Brogden
said.
The tryouts, to be held in
103 Music-Speech Bidding,
are open to any interested
listener in the Golden
Triangle, Brogdon said.
The performances, with a
live audience and sound ef-
fects, will be broadcast from
the Lamar Recital Hall Oct.
29 at 7:30 p.m. as part of a
five-day festival of beloved
old-time shows for the 1930s,
'40s and ’50s.
Shows scheduled include
an episode of “The Lone
Ranger;” a segment of the
comedy “Our Miss
Brooks,” from January
1949; and a chapter from
“Buck Rogers in the 25th
Century, ” long-running
science fiction serial which
originated in the 1930s.
According to Brogdon, the
shows call for actors with
expressive voices. Twenty
speaking parts are open, six
of them for women, although
some actors may be cast in
more than one role. There
are also three sound effects
positions to be filled, with no
radio experience or acting
experience required.
Rehearsals begin Oct. 22
and will be held nightly until
the Oct. 29 broadcast, in-
cluding a possible Saturday
rehearsal Oct. 25.
“Our company really had
a good time doing the old
shows last year, and this
new group should be even
more fun,” Brogdon said.
“The programs are more
ambitious and call for more
production and elaborate
sound effects. For example,
the Lone Ranger segment
calls for galloping horses
and an Indian attack.”
Brogdon is KVLU’s
program director and an
old-time radio buff, with
several hundred hours of
material in his collection.
The “Salute to the Golden
Days of Radio” will be
KVLU’s fall membership
drive and fund-raising
event.
Further audition in-
formation is available from
Brogdon at 838-8831.
