PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE (continued from page 1)
proud of the high standards you and the troopers have esta-
blished today.
Sue and I feel extremely honored today to be a part of this
wonderful ceremony. Our appreciation to Ted Blostein and his
assistants. Also it is our honor, to join old friends again today,
Betsy Lampman and also to see Uncle Charlie again. Now
many of you may not know this but probably the best friend I
have in the Army today is Major General Monty Meigs, the
Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, who is
Betsy's son. We go back many years and we have sat for many
hours discussing the 12th Armored Division and more specifi-
cally the battle of Herrlisheim where his dad was the Battalion
Commander of the 23rd Tank Battalion, and the contributions
12th Armored Division made in winning World War II.
Now what is important about today and this ceremony? It is
a time we take a clear look at both our past and our future. It is
the day we acknowledge the debt we owe the members of the
12th Armored Division who because they so cherished peace,
chose to live and die as warriors.
Could anything be more contradictory than the lives of a
soldier? They love America, so they spend long years in foreign
lands far from her shores. They revere freedom, so they sacri-
fice their own that we may be free. They defend our right to
live as individuals, yet yield their individuality in that cause.
Perhaps, the greatest paradox is, they value life, and so
bravely ready themselves to die in the service of our country. I
know no better example of this paradox than the wonderful
soldiers who gave their lives as members of the Hellcats.

For more than 220 years, our military has provided a bastion
against our enemies, in that time, our world has changed and
our armed forces have changed with it, but the valor, dignity,
and courage of the men and women in uniform remain the
same. From Valley Forge to Desert Storm, from the bloodiest
days of the Hellcat's history, 10 and 11 January 1944 at
Herrlisheim, France, 23rd Battalion, 12th Armored Division
under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Montgomery C.
Meigs, to Braco, Bosnia, 1st Infantry Division under the com-
mand of Major General Montgomery C. Miegs, the fighting
spirit of the American soldier permeates the history of our
nation.
The founders of the United States understood that the
military would be the rampart from which America would
guard freedom. George Washington once stated, "By keeping
up, in peace, a well-regulated and disciplined militia, we shall
take the fairest and best method to preserve, for a long time to
come, the happiness, dignity, and independence of our
country.'' The prophecy of those words were fulfilled time and
