Professor S. Scotr MacDonald poses in
COBA's computer lab beside the College's
latest high-tech acquisition — a color
graphic display of data in the Bridge
Information Systems, Inc. data base, one
of the largest and most comprehensive
data bases of economic, financial and
related information in the world. The
Bridge System is now available to COBA
faculty and students. See the feature article
beginning on page 2.

The publication of this issue of Texas
Tech Business was made possible by the
generous donations of alumni and friends
of the College.
The year was truly one of superlatives! In
1989-90 COBA received the largest research grant in its
history (see page 8). We installed the most powerful
computer in our history and connected into one of the
world's largest and most comprehensive data bases to
support faculty and student learning and research (see
page 2).
Professor Robert Freeman distinguished himself
— and COBA — with his appointment to the Governmental
Accounting Standards Board, the first academic to be
appointed to the board. Two of our accounting alumni —
Jerry A. Davis and Ed Montgomery — were appointed to
national directorships (out of five appointments) by Ernst
and Young (see Network Notes, page 25).
Professor Shelby Hunt, Paul Whitfield Horn
Professor in the Area of Marketing, made two presentations
at Harvard — one in the Philosophy Department and one at
the Harvard Business School.
Professor Jim Burns, new coordinator of the
Area of Information Systems and Quantitative Sciences,
became the third COBA faculty member in as many years to
receive the coveted President's Academic Achievement
Award, the University's second highest faculty recognition
after the Horn Professorship.
Professors Hein and MacDonald of finance
received the Chicago Board of Trade's Outstanding Research
Award. Professors Cheney and Kasper were part of a team
whose paper placed second in the Society for Information
Management's 1990 International Paper Awards
Competition.
We graduated the highest quality group of
baccalaurcate students in our history — the vast majority of
the graduates met the 2.5 minimum CPA requirements (2.7
GPA requirements in management information systems,
accounting and finance) that were put into place four years
ago.
My space allows for only these few highlights.
There is more. As you read this entire issue, your pride in
COBA will grow. Be proud! Enjoy it!
