STIRPES (pronounced Stir-pes) is the plural of
the Latin word stirps, meaning "roots." TEXAS
evolved from the Indian word Tejas, for friendly,
and we're known as the Friendship State. Texas
is also called the Lone Star State because of its
flag with a single star, which was also the flag
of the Republic of Texas.
