The TCAFS includes people from various state agencies, universities, and businesses. It promotes the conservation, development, and wise utilization of recreational and commercial fisheries. It also supports all branches of fisheries science and practice as well as the exchange and dissemination of knowledge about fishery-related subjects.

This edition gives a bried review of the Southern Division of the American Fisheries Society Mid-Year meeting in San Antonio, Feb. 13-16, 1997. An article entitled the "Teaming with Wildlife - A National Natural Resource Initiative" was provided by the Issues Committee. Webster's Words Web Site Reviews discussed the US Fish and Wildlife Service (www.fws.gov) and the National LIbrary for the Environment (www.cnie.org/nle/). News Bites highlighted the topics of Barton Springs Salamander Protection, Gulf Drug Smuggling, Colorado Constitutional Right to Fish, Seafood Industry's Principles for Responsible Fisheries, Humane Society TEDs Survey, Louisiana Gillnets, and Record World Fish Production. Research Definitions gives phrases frequently found in technical writings (ex. "It has long been known . . ." = I haven't bothered to look up the original reference").
