McMurry College has many
loyal friends and supporters who
have been instrumental in bring-
ing about her growth in her short
but fruitful history. Among these
are Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Willson of
Floydada, Texas, who through
efforts and support of the college
have contributed much to the
progress of McMurry. Of the many
donations which the college has
received through the years from
interested people of this area, the
Willson Lectureship series has
perhaps meant more to the lives
of the individual students than
any other one gift.
The Willsons, wishing to give
the McMurry students and the
people of this area the oppor-
tunity to hear outstanding lec-
turers, endowed the college in
1946 with $10,000 to establish the
Willson Lectures, to be given an-
nually in March. An additional
$10,000 was added to this fund for
Mr. J. M. Willson
a second lecturer in 1947, and still
another $5,000 was given to bring
the endowment to a total of
$25,000.
Dr. Roy L. Smith, then editor
of the Christian Advocate, was
the main speaker for the initial
series in 1946. In 1947 Bishop
William C. Martin, Bishop of the
Dallas area, and Dr. Grace Sloan
Overton, a family life consultant,
brought the lecture series.
Bishop Charles C. Selecman
was guest speaker in 1948, giv-
ing one address. Featured lectur-
ers were Dr. Hazen G. Werner,
educator, writer and consultant,
and Dorothy McConnell, co-editor
of the WORLD OUTLOOK.
Dr. Overton paid a return visit
in 1949, Dr. Charles Ray Goff,
minister of the Chicago Temple,
being the other speaker in that
series. Bishop J. Waskom Pickett
and Dr. Bernice Milbtirn Moore
were the speakers in 1950. Bishop
Pickett was then serving as the
Episcopal head of Delhi, India,
and Dr. Moore was a homemak-
ing consultant of the Vocational
Education Board and the Hogg
Foundation.
In 1951 Dr. Louis Hadley Evans,
pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church in Hollywoojl, Calif., and
Dr. Evelyn Millis Duvall, execu-
tive secretary of the National
Council on Family Life, appeared
Mrs. J. M. Willson
on the lecture program.
Dr. Marshall T. Steel and Dr.
Mary Alice Jones were the lec-
turers for 1952. Dr. Steel is the
pastor of the Highland Park Meth-
odist Church in Dallas.
In 1953 the lectures were com-
bined with the Ten Years of
Progress celebration honoring
President Harold G. Cooke. Bish-
op W. Angie Smith of the New
