Delicate suggestions.
At the commencement of oar career, as
Associate Editor of the Times, we wish to
impress one important fact upon the minds of
the people. With many the opinion has be-
come popular, that editors and printers are
organized upon the model of a chamelion,
which some say can subsist upon thin air.
Now upon our sacred word and honor, there
' is no more truth in the doctrine, than in the
theory that the blessed shining'moon is made
of green cheese. Of our own knowledge we

The loud winds blew the snow into my face,
And snickered as it answered—'-Nary place."

A Merchant Cowhided by a Cali-
fornia widow.—A few evenings ago a
e liberated that he may i cowhiding affair extraordinary took place
in in revolutionising the at one of the fashionable boarding houses
in New York. It appears from the
Tribune that there were some sixty board-
ers, including merchants with ther wives
and children, and several clerks. Among
the females was a charming "California
widow," about whom one of the mer-
chant boarders bad put in circulation
some unpleasant reports. The Tribune
says:
The lady paid no attention to the re-
ports until one of a more virulent nature
than the rest was circulated, when she
made up her mind to cowhide the indi-
vidual, and communicated her intention
to some of the other boarders whom she
counted as her friends. She had set the
day and time at the dinner table.
The day arrived, but for some reason
all the the leaders and officers had fled,

dience to fashion is a
sion of the laws of woman's nature, a
greater injury to her physical and men-
tal constitution, than the hardship of
poverty and neglect. The slave woman
at her tasks will live and grow old, and
see two or three generations of her mis-
tress pass away. The washer woman,
with scarcely a ray of hope to cheer her
in her toils, will live to see her fashiona-
ble sisters all die around her, and the
kitchen maid is hearty and strong when
her lady has to be nursed like a sick ba-
by. It is a sad truth that fashion-pain-
pered women are almost worthless for all
the great ends of human life. They
have but little force of character; they
have still les3 power of moral will, and
quite as little physical energy. They
live for no great purpose in life, they ac-
complish no worthy ends ; thc-y are only
doll forms in the hands of milliners and
servants, to be dressed and fed to order.
They dress nobody ; they feed nobody,
and save nobody. They write no books;
they set no rich examples of virtue and
womanly life. If they rear children, ser-
vants and nurses do it all, save to con-
ceive and give them birth. And when
reared, what are they ? What do they
ever amount to, but weaker scions of the
old stock ? Who ever heard of a fashion-

Carpets origixated ix Persia.—a
real Persian or Turkish carpet rivals the
most famous of Europe in the variety and
harmony of its colors. At the London
exhibition the superiority was remarked
by everybody.
The finest European carpets are made
at the Gobelin's, Paris. They are all
made by hand; some occupy years in
the manufacture. The lioyal Wilton are
also beautiful. All Wilton, Kiddermin-
ster and velvet carpets have the pile cut.
In the imperial Brussels the figure is
uncut, both in figure and in ground. The
costly rugs, exhibited at carpet stores,
on which the figures are delineated al-
most as delicately as in a painting, are
not woven; but the threads are laid hori-
zontally, one by one, as straw in an ost-
ler's cutting box, so that their ends form
the pattern.
The bussiness in America is already
extensive. Many carpcts sold as Lne-
lish are home manufacture.
