this warm weather and the near ap-

have the effect of forcing matters
somewhat.

All notices of theatrical enter-.
tainments appearing in this paper
previous to the appearance of such
companies at this place are made
simply as paid advertisements and
are based upon or copied from press ■
notices made elsewhere and for-
warded to us. Os course in many
instances we know nothing person-
ally of the merits of the company
hence we refrain from personal
comment. Where the worth or
merit of a company is known to us
we invariably state in our local
columns. As a rule we are in the
same position of the Opera House
manager compelled to accept the
opinions of others who have seers
and had the opportunity which we
have not of judging and weighing
the talent and character of the
performers. This we Can say how-
ever as a rule manager Erlich
affords only the better class of en-
tertainments to his patrons.
An adjourned meeting of the
East Side Council was held at the
city hall in accordance with the an-
nouncement previously made at
4:30 p. m. yesterday. The first mat-
ter under consideration was the al-
lowance of salaries and fees to the
various city officers for the past
month followed by the approval
and allowance of certain other bills
against the city. A petition from
citizens of the third Ward asking
for equipments to enable them
to fully organize a fire com-
pany was promptly granted and
provision made for the purchase of
300 feet of additional new fire hose
together with a new hand reel cart.
Another fire plug was also ordered
to be put in at the corner of 6th
and Hickory streets. After some
further deliberation the council ad-
journed to the next regular time of
meeting. *
Fanny Hill Burlesque Company.
This company made their first
appearance here last night to a
packed house and gave a good per-
formance. Harry D'Alma on the
pedestal and chair is clever in his
business. Flora Mitchell caught the
house in her negro songs. Maudine
in feats of juggling on the wire was
also good. The Sisters Merten are
very good looking girls and their
dancing is quite superb. The stat-
ues looked pretty. Harry Arm-
strong the comedian late of Hav-
erly's Minstrels in Chicago Eden
Musee helped to send the show a
booming Mlle. Minnetta the fe-
male Sandow—this lady performed
some wonderful feats of strength
■last night with her teeth. Barret-
ta the clown was very funny. The
Livingston family five in number
are a whole show in themselves
and the double somersaults from
shoulder to shoulder were excellent.
The performance concluded with
Sin-a-bad—a Sailor. The burlesque
was funny. This company gave a
good show far above the average
burlesque shows that are given
here.—[Des Moines lowa State

Mention was made in this paper
some days since of a notice which
was secretely posted on the Gate
| City National Bank threatening a
I raid upon that institution for the
puqjose of plundering same. The
notice was in many respects similar
to that which appeared on a West
Texas bank some months previous
and which was carried out in a
manner that astounded the people
not alone of that State but of the
entire country. .Little was said of
the Gate City Bank's mysterious
threat in public but a quiet and
thoroughly vigilant watch was kept
up which met with due reward.
Some days after the notice was
posted Marshal Crenshaw learned
of the presence in this city of a
very tough looking gang number-
ing six members. The men were
heavily armed and roughly at-
tired in the typical style of the
native Westerner.. The gang visited
several livery stables in the city
under pretense of engaging saddle
horses giving it out that they were
cattlemen here in the pursuit of
their vocation. On learning of
their presence in the city and of
many suspicious circumstances
identifying them with the threat-
ened robbery City Marshal Cren-
shaw started out on their trail
with half a dozen picked men at.his
call. The supposed bandits were
equally alert however and getting
wind of the Marshal’s movements
they succeeded in eluding the offi-
cer got together post haste and
lost no time in in shaking the dust
of Texarkana from their feet.
Whether or not these were the
men suspected it is safe to assume
that the city was none the loser by
their flight.
Woodruff’s Bondsmen Will Settle.
An announcement of the termi-
nation of the “Woodruff bond liti-
gation” which will prove of general
interest as a news item to the peo-
ple of the entire state appeared in
the Arkansas Gazette of today as
follows:
The attorneys representing the
sureties on the bond of Wm. E
Woodruff have decided not to ap-
peal from the decision of the Pulas-
ki Chancery court and on calling a
meeting of the sureties for the pur-
pose of making settlement. The
state had originally decided to ap-
peal to the Supreme court but
when the decree was drawn and
presented to Judge Rose he struck
out that portion granting an ap-
peal on behalf of the state. The
judgment was for nearly $50000.
