The Edwardian is a monthly newsmagazine published by the students of St.
Edward’s University. The opinions expressed are either those of the staff or
the individual writer and do not necessarily reflect those of the University.

a yearbook, and Everyman, a literary
magazine. SEU is a member of the
Associated Collegiate Press, the
Columbia Scholastic Press Associa-
tion and the Southwestern Journalism
Congress.
The Edwardian is recruiting page
editors, writers, photographers,
artists, and an advertising manager.
Applications can be picked up and
handed in at the Edwardian office in
more promising time for resolutions
in a university is right now. I’d like
each of you to think about this
academic year and what you plan to
put into it. There is really no limit to
what you can get from St. Edward’s
University when you decide to get
involved.
I will be talking to the entire St.
Edward’s community about our major
plans for this year at the fall semester
President’s Meeting on Friday, Sep-
tember 6 at 4:00 p.m. Although
space in Moody 300 is limited, the
meeting is open to all members of the
St. Edward’s University community
including students. We will also be
video taping the President’s Meeting
should groups of students/dorm
groups/organizations like to hear
those plans for the University.
One last thought on involvement:
Involvement is a very concrete busi-
ness that, for me, usually goes beyond
good resolutions. I usually have to
take some initiative or some risk to
get to know others and see what
opportunities are available. I suspect
you will have to do the same, and
September is the perfect time to
start. There will be times to learn
about new student activities and
clubs; faculty members will be sharing
learning opportunities with you; there
will be new students and opportunities
for new friends. I urge you to take
the initiative and make the most of
this year.

ested in producing art, literature or

Welcome to the 1985-86 academic
year and a special welcome to all
those who are new to the St. Edward’s
University community.
The Edwardian has invited me to
use this space during the coming
year to share some thoughts with St.
Edward’s students and I am happy
to take advantage of that invitation.
For the most part, I will be talking
with you about the educational oppor-
tunity you have at St. Edward’s. I
think other parts of the newspaper
do a good job in reporting major
events and ongoing projects for the
University and so I have decided to
use this space for some philosophical
dialogue with you.
Perhaps the most important thing
I would like to share with you at the
beginning of a new school year is the
strong belief I have that education at
St. Edward’s is not a spectator sport.
St. Edward’s is a place where people
can get involved and get to know one
another. You are the key player and
the quality of your learning will be
directly related to the quality of your
involvement.
Involvement at St. Edward’s is
equally important in the classroom
and outside of the classroom. It is
important regardless of your age,
your status as full-time or part-time
or your national or ethnic origin.
Only when each of our students
becomes completely involved in the
life of the University can a St.
Edward’s University education be
fully realized.
What do I mean by becoming fully
involved in the classroom? Primarily
I mean thinking and discussing your
thoughts with other students and

Dear St. Edward’s Students:
but it can open a great many doors
for your future. The difference be-
tween a valuable degree and one that
is not of great value is not dependent
on what major you choose. Yes,
some majors are more marketable
than others, but all majors are market-
able if the person who completes the
degree is a skilled communicator, a
perceptive listener, a person know-
ledgeable about the world in which
he or she lives and eager to continue
learning. You can be that kind of
person when you graduate from St.
Edward’s or you can fall short of
that even though you have the same
number of credit hours. St. Edward’s
has an excellent faculty and a wide-
range of support services but only
you can make the final choice about
the quality of your education.
A similar option for quality exists
outside of the classroom at St.
Edward’s. Opportunities for growing
and learning through cultural activi-
ties and lectures, opportunities for
interacting with others in sports and
recreational activities, opportunities
for service, opportunities for spiritual
development — all of these exist at
St. Edward’s. Some students not
only take advantage of them but
invest in improving the quality of life
at St. Edward’s while they are stu-
dents. That, by the way, is one of the
special benefits of a small university.
If we don’t have an activity, you can
probably start it. If you see a way to
improve life on campus, we’d like to
support your investment.
Education really does involve all
of these things outside the classroom.
It involves everything that takes the
gifts that are in you and allows those
gifts to grow and benefit others.

How does St. Ed’s measure up to the fast-growing, mega-trend, boom-
town of Austin? Are we keeping our standards along the same lines with
prospective Austin employers? Are graduates finding jobs in Austin and
what to Austin firms think about our graduates? We’ll take a close look at
the present and future thoughts of SEU students and area employers.
