Something of military discipline
is being tried out with the foot-
ballers. And they love it.
Starting this week, after cal-
isthentics and limbering up ex-
ercises, members of each postion
go through their individual jobs.
Backfield men try fakes spins,
ball carrying. Ends receive passes,
linemen charge, try out blocks.
Everyone goes through his paces.
Then the first team runs its plays
against the second team, quart-
erbacked by Jimmy Carson.
Purpose of the workout, Coach
Williams declares, is to develop
assurance in the players and
make each man aware of how he
is to funciion in play. It’s a fine
weakness revealer, too, he has
discovered.
Athletes this week also brushed
up on blocking and tacking. The
dummy was raised, and every
man given his chance at it.
“Unless a team can block and
tackle,” Coach remarks, “it just
isn’t.”
Jive Jingo Williams Sets Rhythm
for Tigers With ‘Get Your Man’
. by Ed Corrigan
Get hep to that jive! Solid Jackson!
Get your man! Solid Denver!
Hailing from Denver, Colo.,
everything about Coach is Den-
ver. “I was bom in Denver, edu-
cated at Denver U, and coached
Denver high schools and grade
schools,” he will tell you.
It wouldn’t take a student poll
though to convince him that he
shouldn’t go back to Denver. Not
after the job he has done in shap-
ing the Tigers into a clicking or-
ganization.
Coach Williams is one real re-
lief man far from second rate.
Offering his services when Gene
“Nifty” Norris . . . who was sign-
ed to coach . . . was called to ac-
tive duty by the Navy, Williams
was in anything but a soft espot.
With two sons on the squad,
the opening of school just around
the comer, and a likely green
team on his hands, Coach Wil-
• liams had to plan quickly and to
plan well. He did.
He called football practice si-
multaneously with officer candi-
date school. He started in with
fundamentals, blocking and tack-
ling, and he’s sticking to them.

Hold that line! Kick that 80-
ooal! BLOOOCK THAT KICK!
It’s the cherring section
through their vocal enthusiasm
supporting the players on the
field. If the cheers are longer
and the noise louder this year, it
may be the girls are to blame.
Six lovely ladies from St.
Mary’s Academy are putting their
eyes on the boys and making
them like it... as cheer leaders,
of course. The girls working with
the Cadet pep squad are Elaine
Salence, Ailene Beiter. Patsy
Hughes. Frances Fischer, Vir-
4 ginia Halden, and Terry Leahy.
November Busiest Month
for Academy Gridmen
November will be a busy mon-
th for Hilltop gridmen, Broth-
er Alexander, CSC, director of
athletics, predicts. Three games
are already on the books, and
more may be forthcoming.
St. Mary’s in Port Arthur,
Mason High of Mason, and a
final game aaround Thanksgiv-
ing with St. Anthony’s of San
Antonio are already scheduled.
San Marcos, who is itching for
a game, may be signed before
the present month is over. Their
single encounter of the year
found them tying with Round
Rock, Friday opponents of the
Cadets.
Surprise Booking Friday
Finds Cadets Playing
Well Matched Foe
With no game for the week
scheduled Monday, Academy
football men today are hard at
work smoothing off a few nifties
for Round Rock Friday night.
Scheduled there at 8 o’clock,
the game likely will be nip and
tuck all the way, Coach Carl
Williams conjectured yester-
day.
Both teams are balanced so far
as weight and experience are con-
cerned, he said. Though neither
team has won a game yet this
season, Round Rock tied with
San Marcos Academy 7 to 7.
Last year they held the heavy
end of a score against St. Ed.
ward’s 29 to 0.
Optimistic though not over-
confident, locals hope to thread
Round Rock for the first scalp
of the season. Physical condition
of the men is good, Coach de-
clared. and he feels they have the
scoring punch to deliver this
weekend.
Blocking and tackling again
formed the core of the week’s
workout. With the next two
days spent in polishing up plays,
Friday’s game will be good
enough for anybody’s money,
Williams reiterated.

Takes Cadets
15-6 Thursday
Pass From Rich to
Phillips Scores Lone
Tally for Hilltoppers
Fighting all the way, Cadets
lost to Austin “B” 56-6 Thursday
night after scoring the first
touchdown. Defeat- waas the sec-
ond in as many tries for the
locals.
Living up to their name of
Tigers, Cadets clawed, wriggled,
padded their way through the
Austin line the first half. As the
gun went off for the half, they
had just opened a brilliant off-
ensive.
Cadet’s score came when a
pass from Gifford Rich to Clif-
ton Philips was flopped into the
air Duncan, Austin safety, and
landed in Phillips’ hands over
the goal. Ed Williams attempted
the extra point, but the kick was
low.
One Austin score came when
Spires intercepted a pass and
lateralled to Jackson for points.
The kick failed.
Ed Williams. Tommy Steiner,
and Al Serrano played heads up
defensive for the locals. Time
after time they bottled Austin
plays in all directions.

Scoring first instead of being an asset has proved a jinx to prep
gridsters, who Thursday received their second defeat in as many
starts. Although the Cadet eleven could not push over more than
one touchdown, the locals consistently outplayed their opponents
throughout the Thursday night contest.
Austin's scores resulted from a short drive and conversion,
a safety, and a pass interception. Cadets made their lone coun-
ter on a pass from Rich to Phillips. J. Williams, Serrano,
Rich, and Steiner stood out for the home eleven, while Durcan,
Tooke, and Moran played steady games on the winning side. ’
To date (Monday) no opponents have been engaged for the Ca-
dets until the November 5 game with Mason. Coach Williams says,
however, that he is trying to schedule other October games to fill
out the Cadet season.
Thanks again to students, cheer leaders, and faculty for their
encouraging support at the game. We don’t forget it.
Maybe you've heard the talk about the Homecoming? It
seems a good idea to celebrate such an event with a game and
a dance. If rumor becomes a reality, we'll need everyone's
cooperation. And that means YOU.
The physical ed. program is progressing favorably from all ob-
servations. Brother Alexander has added touch football, as a
recreational supplement, to the-'class’s regular exercises.
Attention, you all! Everybody be sure to attend the com-
ing "E" Club dance, necessitated by lack of a sufficient ath-
letic fund. It's another way to show off your swell school
spirit by having a good time. Date for the dance is not defi-
nitely set, though next week's column will provide full infor-
tion on the fund fun.
Despite winter’s fast approach, many Cadets have turned to
newly cleared tennis courts for recreation. It’s a pleasure to see
everyone participating in athletics, whether it’s P. E., football,
basketball, tennis, or swimming. Brrrr! Incidentally, if the nights
become much colder, we can hold an ice carnival in the gym . . .
St. Ed Cadets turn Eskimos . . . yowsuh!
As an appendix to this column, let me add a word of warning to
footballers lowinstudies. Six weeks exams tomorrow. If you
fail a course, you are ineligible for football. The entire team asks
that you study and pass . . . pass them for the team’s sake as well
as your own . It may be tough, but you can do it.

He inserted a confidence into his
squad and convinced the student
body he had something worth
supporting. Then he set out .to
build a schedule. That he’s still
expanding.
If, you press him, he’ll smile
wryly and with a suggestion of a
blush admit he was called “Rube”
during his college playing days,
that he lettered in football, bas-
ketball, and track, that he be-
longs to Kappa Sigma.
Will he coach basketbaall? “So
far as I know, yes!” he admits.
