we here in the Senate open every

The President of the United
States must take the oath of of-
fice with his hand on the Bible,
and part of his oath is an affir-
mation to Almighty God.
One of the mottos of our Na-

-certainly our forefathers did not
mean to say that for a period
of time it was all right to have
public religious affirmations,
and after a point, it was not.
I would like to quote one of

leaders, Billy Graham, refer-

Mrs. Hays is an operator for Southwestern Bell in Fort
Worth. She hasn’t missed a day’s worksince May 10,
1951. You have to have some pretty good reasons to
work 15 years without being absent one day. You have
. to have what we at Southwestern Bell call the “spirit
of service.” Mrs. Hays has this spirit.
“I’ve been very lucky to keep in good health,” says

“This As another step toward
the secularization of the United
States. Followed to its logical
conclusion we will have to take
the chaplains out of the Armed
Forces, and the President can-

The framers of our constitution
meant we were to have freedom
of religion, not freedom from
religion.”

a key measure being presented
to Congress for consideration
this spring, a bill allowing vol-
untary student prayer in
schools.
Few actions by the Supreme
Court have raised as much con-
troversy, posed as many unan-
swered questions, or fostered
such legislative activity as the
series of decisions concerning
school prayer.
This decision and its succes-

the daily activity by our Nation’s

This right of Americans which
is as old as the Constitution
