RIDING THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE — An area of growing tour-

these two ranchers are riding along the Devil's Backbone, a
scenic range of hills, not far from Canyon Dam Lake. President

OPTICAL ILLUSION? — This water conservation
demonstration by the Graham Chapter Future For-
mers of America draws attention of Allen Oliver.
Jimmy Wallace, and Rick Thetford, Graham chap-
ter members during Texas Public Schools Week ob-
servance The demonstration shows a seemingly
endless supply of water flowing from a faucet at-
tached to a short length of galvanized pipe sus-
pended in mid-oir by wires from the ceiling —

A scheme used on the West
Coast where there are miles
of beach but few harbors is to
install single long, slim trail-
er-type rollers on pieces of
sturdy plywood about two feet
square. Set on the beach, two
or more of these portable rol-
lers create a quick marine
railway. If you’re a handyman,
some old washing machine roll-
ers will work well enough and i

For intermittent launchings
across sand, It can help to let
about half the air out of trailer
tires. However, carry a pump
or air bottle to reinflate them
to reasonable hardness before
driving to a gas station for full
inflation.
To launch across narrow
strips of soft sand or mud,
Install a trailer hitch and ball
on the front of your car and
use it when launching and haul-
ing out. This keeps the rear
wheels on firm ground as you
ease the trailer across the soft
area.

GETTING ACROSS BEACHES
So near and yet so far is how
it seems to a boater as he
gazes across several yards of
soft beach separating firm
ground from inviting waters.
There are, and always will
be, places where boating and
fishing are good but where
launching ramps cannot be built.
One way to solve the pro-
Aa,fo select a boat that
is light enough to carry across
the beach or roll across on its
trailer without too much strain.
Surf fshermen on the East
Coast, report boating authori-
ties, are very partial to alum-
inum boats. If necessary, the
small and medium size motors
used on them can be easily
detached to make carrying each
component even easier. ,
Air - inflated rollers are
another solution. L ight and soft,
they roll over sand easily and
by using a pair of them, two
men can work a boat across
even the widest, softest beach.
Deflated, they take up little
space in a car, or carried in
the boat while still inflated,
they make supplementary buoy-
ancy tanks to small craft.
Visitors to the world famous Italian Riviera long remember
their stop at Portofino, an old fishing village renowned for its
lace making, pastel hued houses, and ideal climate
