A five hour stand off between
lawmen and Clyde Jones Jr ended with
no one being hurt and Jones being put
back in jail Friday but it took tear gas
to end the stalemate after Jones refused
pleas by officers and his attorney to
surrender
The tense situation began about
5:30 am Friday when Steve Walker
notified the Panola. County Sheriffs
Office that Jones had held him at gun
point and threatened him
Then, when Panola County Chief
Deputy Jack Ellett went to arrest Jones
over the incident with Walker. Jones
fired three pistol shots at Ellett
Ellett returned two shots to force
Jones to stop shooting at him long
enough to take cover
“I aimed over his head on pur
pose," Ellett said
“I didn't want to hurt him unless he
forced me to ”
Ellett then called for assistance at 6
a m as Jones took refuge in the small
frame house where he had been staying
since being released from jail on an ap
pod bond following his June 10 can
viction for aggravated assault.
