The platform made at Galveston
declares in favor of public schools
and invokes the whole power of the
Legislature to give us an effective
system.
It declares in favor of frontier
protection and pledges the exercise
of the most energetic endeavors to
vouchsafe that protection.
So much for the State policy of
Democracy. But the fourth article
speaks to the national policy, and in
thunder tones interprets the grand
aim and purpose of the party in the
oilowing words:
That the democratic party, firmly
upholding the constitution of the
United States as the foundation and
limitation of the powers of the gen-
eral government, and the safe shield
of the liberties of the people, de-
mands for the citizen the largest free-
dom consistent with public order,
and for every State the right of self-
government and home rule; that to
uphold tbe former and protect the
latter the democracy of Texas plants
itself on the great leading principles
enunciated in the inaugural of Presi-
dent Jefferson and the farewell ad-
dress of the immortal Jackson.
Here we find the spirit of democ-
racy, which will render our
party organization vital so long
as the people are free to
deliver an enlightened verdict
upon the character of the institu-
tions which shall govern them. "The
world is governed too much’7 is the
slogan of Democracy. Radicalism
says that it is not governed

Radicalism wants sterner laws more
inexorably enforced, and for what ?
To protect timid thieves from the
just indignation of the people. Rad-
icalism too is opposed to State Rights
that only check upon the despotic
tendencies of the general govern-
ment. Take away the rights of the
States and before five years have
passed a kingly crown would rest
upon some Radicals head, and
these States would then surely be
satrapies indeed. Corruption would
reek in every department of gov-
ernment, and the voice of the people
would be unheard, or expressed amid
the red crash of anarchy. Tell us
not that this is impossible. The leth-
argy which rendered the despotism of
E. J. Davis possible in this proud
young State, forewarns us to be jeal-
ous of our liberties, and to resist
every encroachment of the common
enemy. With these lights before us,
