Earl Golding, outdoor editor
of sponsoring Waco Tribune- customary
Herald, awarded 30 trophies and hampered
50 certificates in closing cere- Lake Whitney.
Winds of near tornadic force
struck the lower lake area April
27. The second storm hit the
Katy Bridge area exactly one
week later.
Scores of private and com-
mercial cottages were damaged
by the wind and accompanying
hail. Many boat-houses and
docks were ripped from their
moorings, causing considerable
damage to craft. Hundreds of
trees were snapped.
Heaviest loss was suffered
by Ralph Royal Boat Works in
Lofers Bend Park.
Wind warning flags were dis-
played every weekend--and fre-
quently during the week.
Rain fell six days and total-
led 2.79 inches in April. This
year’s total of 9.13 inches still
is below the average of 12.58
inches.
The water level varied almost
two feet. Low of 518.72 feet
(above sea level) registered
April 19; high of 520.62 on
April 28. The level returned to
normal 520 early in May.
Temperatures ranged from a
low of 38 degrees on April 4 to
a high of 94 on the 15th.

Lake Whitney never has re-
ceived due credit for its big
bass, but the most skeptical
sportsman now must admit that
Whitney ranks with the best
bass lakes.
The state tourney record was
broken three times during the
fifth annual State Bass Tourna-
ment May 26-29 at Lake Whitney.
First, John Gerath, Waco,
weighed in a 6 pound, 3*/2 ounce
bass to top the old record by
2% ounces.
The next day Billy Wilson of
Temple set another new record
with a 7 pound, P/j ounce black.
Then in Sunday’s finals Gor-
don Schmitt, Midland, brought
in a 7 pound, 2 ounce lunker to
take the big-bass title and set
to- a mark that is bound to stand at
least a year. Schmitt, former
operator of Arrowhead Lodge,
caught his big bass in familiar
waters at the mouth of Towash WQ
Creek. jj
v Favorites Murray Muston and H
George Raven of Austin lived ?.
up to their reputations by taking !
the team title--and finishing I
one-two for individual strings.
Their two-day total was 38 Ibs.-
5^2 oz.
Muston took the individual I
trophy with 20 lbs.-2 oz. Part- .
ner Raven was close second
with 18 pounds, 3% ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Roff Hood, Dal- I
las, won their third husband-
wife division title in five years
with 13 pounds, 8 ounces.
Mrs. Orval Jamar, Ft. Worth,
copped the ladies crown with a
6 pound, 2 ounce string. Mrs.
Bob Badders, San Antonio,
bagged a 3 pound, 12^2 ounce
bass to win the ladies big-bass
trophy.
4 Three-hundred and 10 of the
state’s best anglers participat-
ed. Sixty-three qualified for the
finals. About 500 pounds of
bass were weighed in, despite
some high winds, rainstorms
> ' • and murky water.
