Letters
to the editor
To the Editor:
I would like to take this opjiortunity to
say "thank you" to all the residents of I ake
Travis who donated to the Brown Santa
Program this year There are too many to
list individually, but they know who they
are. We collected SI,293 74 in cash dona
Hons, many new and g<*>d used toys,
canned goods, turkeys, and many other
Customers can take their Safeway register tapes to the store or turn
them in to an organization that is collecting the tapes, and Safeway will
give that organization I percent of the tape total. In this tight economy ,
what better way to make your money go further — buy your groceries
locally and then see a part of your money go to help local organizations.
Bravo, Safeway! There’s no question that the company's offer to re-
fund I percent of sales to local non-profit organizations has a profit motive
— to increase sales at the local store. But having said that, we say again.
Bravo. Safeway! No other grocery chain has such a program to infuse
funds back into the community .

Several area groups have already jumped on the bandwagon The first
was the Brown Santa program of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.
Lonnie Mathews, local coordinator, recently turned in $28,000 worth
of tapes to Safeway fora net return of $280. The Lake Travis Education
Foundation and the Lake Travis Community Library are also participating
in the program.
Perhaps its stressing a point already made, but the $280 going to Brown
Santa would have been lost to the community w ithout the Safeway 1 per-
cent program. Area residents would have bought $28,000 worth of stuff
at other grocery chains in other towns and there would have been no
return to the community.
The I percent program is just one more reason why luike Travis
residents should Shop Lake Travis!

I would also like to extend a special note
of appreciation to Corby Hicks, Joe Wor
thy. Rick Mathews, and Mike Richardson
from the Hudson Bend Volunteer Fire De
partment. without whom my fob would
have been very difficult I would also like
to thank my employer. Aggie Hall, who
generously allowed me to work out of her
business, using company time to make
items I've learned one thing about the peo
pic thai live in this area, when you let them
know there is a need, they come through
with Hying colors
phone calls, run enands. and many other
things
Once again, the I ake I ravis community
showed what Christmas is really all
about sharing I hank you and next year
will be even bigger and better

Brown Santa
and a Santa diving head first into a chimney. And of
course, lots of boats with lots of lights.
Just in case you're sitting there with bated breath (or
is it baited — I never knew what either one was), wonder-
ing which boat won, it was the Witchers’ boat The Las
Brisas. totally outlined in white lights, won first place
honors, followed by Ed and Lynn Millett’s boat, the Edie
Mane, which hail a Christmas tree on the bow. Karen's
Boat. owned by George and Karen Spier, won third place
tor the spotlighted feet of Santa sticking out of the
chimney.
The judges also gave a couple of other aw ards, like the
"Gilligan s Island Award" to Ed and laiu Gardner’s Hap
py Hour because it almost went aground and the Best
Religious Theme to Steve and Anita Cokins’ Cassie HI
Anita also won the Best Singing of a Non-Traditional Song
award for her rendition of “Row. Row. Row Your Boat."
Honorable Mention went to the unknown owner of the
tagalong sailboat that had a Christmas tree outlined in
green lights and rigged to the mast
We all went back to Vincent’s after the parade for fa-
jitas The party usually closes out the season for Vincent,
so he always docs it up great It’s sort of a party for his
250 closest friends. I think. and you all get intimately ac-
quainted by the time it s over because it's so crowded
Just kidding — it’s actually open to the public
Any way. the whole thing is great fun the parade
and the party afterward And even the neighbors have fun,
all those neighbors up and down the lake, who get a great
view of the parade Still, it must be a little startling to
be sitting in your living room and suddenly see lighted
( hristmas trees and other such stuff floating down the
lake!
And happy holidays to you. hx>

Lighted Christmas floats take to the water
Sparkling Christmas lights on an inky black background
make up one of the neatest traditions of the lake area.
Every year the Hurst Harbor Marina sponsors a lighted
boat Christmas parade followed by a blowout Christmas
party at Vincent's on the I.ake.
This year was no exception The only difference is that
this year the View had TWO photographers on the scene
to catch the action One (me, if you must know) was a
judge and was stationed on the judges boat out in the mid-
dle of the lake. The other had a great view of the judges'
boat. Unfortunately, either the cameras or the
photographers malfunctioned in both locations and neither
crack shot got any shots al ail of the wondrous affair. So
you’ll just have to take my word for it that it was
wondrous.
Activities begin with dock panics Some folks just put
out some crackers and cheese, but others really do it up
fancy For example. Les and Betsye W'itcher won the Best
Dock Party award mostly because of the red tablecloth
and silver candelabra, although the champagne and shrimp
stuff helped Wine coolers, mulled wine and egg nog were
among other beverages served at the various parties. (I
know what you're thinking. "Ah. hah." you’re saying
"No wonder she couldn't take a decent picture !” Au
contraire I had very little to drink, although I did mix
my beverages, which I m told is not a good idea Anyway,
that is NOT why the pictures didn't turn out Actually.
I don t know why the pictures didn’t turn out.)
There were about eight boats officially entered in the
lighted boat parade, and almost that many more that )<>ined
in just for fun Christmas trees formed out of lights are
popular, although twinkling lights outlining the shape of
the boat arc also seen a lot This year's crop featured
several Christmas trees, a lighted angel with a trumpet
