GENERAL DGS NEWS
PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Our DGS 50th anniversary year 2005 is off to a
good start. The twice-yearly Library Lock-In, held
Saturday night, January 22, was another big
success. The event, smoothly coordinated by our
new Exec VP, Jeri Steele, included excellent help
from the library staffers, Lloyd Bockstruck, Ed
Boehringer, Lea Markoff, and Heather Williams;
good food provided by our Hospitality volunteers,
Susan Morris and Bobbie Jean Hooser; and, lots of
good camaraderie from the 55-plus attendees, who
declared they are already looking forward to the
next Lock-In to be held 30 July.
By the time you receive this Newsletter, we will
have enjoyed the first of three lectures comprising
our Spring Lecture Series. In her talk, Claire Bettag
will have shown us how to take good advantage of
National Archives materials without having to travel
to Washington, DC, as well as alerting us to the
genealogical danger of making assumptions.
Although we hope all our lectures are sellouts (a
maximum of 176 people can fit in the DPL
auditorium), should you wish to attend either of the
other two but haven't pre-registered by mail, you
may either contact us by email at
lectures(adallasgenealogy.com or call the library
genealogy section (214-670-1433) to find out if
there is still space available so that you could come
early to the event as a "walk-in."
One of our key 50th Anniversary Year projects is
going to include the challenge of increasing the
number of books in the DPL genealogy section
from 96,000 to 100,000 volumes! We are still
working out some details but, in addition to
donating money directly to the Genealogical
Section of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library for
the purchase of books, you may wish to consider
donating books that you already have that are not
yet owned by DPL. Lloyd's wish-list includes books
(at least) relating to any and all geographical
locations, genealogical periodicals, family histories,
phone directories, roster lists of people in churches,
schools (not yearbooks), clubs, and associations. If
you either own personally or come across goodpossible acquisitions at garage/estate sales or
antique stores, you can either look on-line at the
DPL book database, www.dallaslibrary.org, or call
the genealogy section staffers at 214-670-1433 to
inquire whether yours would be a welcome new
addition to the collection.
We hope to see you at some, if not all, of our
meetings!
