NEW YORK (AP) - The
new Mrs. America 1982, a
veteran of three marriages in
11 years, says she hopes to
inspire women who have been
touched by divorce.
“When you consider the
statistics that one of every
two marriages fail, divorce is
a problem millions of women
have faced or will face,” said
Rhonda McGeeney, a twice -
divorced, 29 • year - old
mother of two from Houston.
“It is difficult for any man or
woman. I hope to inspire
women to know that when
times seem darkest, one will
grow and can determine one’s
own future.”
Mrs. McGeeney was
married at ge 18 and again at
22. She appeared Wednesday
was with her husband of
three months, Pat McGeeney,
32, at a Manhattan news

disease that attacks the lungs
and the digestive system by
producing a thick glue - like
mucus that impairs normal
breathing and digestion. An

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -
The Texas Court of Criminal
Appeals, in a 5 • 4 decision,
today threw out a 19th •
century doctrine that said a
defendant could be tried for
only one offense committed
during a continuous crime
spree.
Today’s decision means
prosecutors can, for example,
seek separate convictions in a
case where a defendant
kidnaps a woman, robs and
rapes her. The “carving
doctrine’* had said
prosecutors could pursue
only one offense.
“We now abandon the
carving doctrine for the
compelling reason that it
encourages crime,” said Judge
Carl Daily’s majority opinion.
“Justice and reason demand
prosecution for each of the
separate offenses so that a
robber will be deterred from “^y-
kidnapping, raping and
murdering the victim.”
Dally said the doctrine had
