*Toast It And Cut It'

Degr Heloise:
For thin toasted sandwiches,
toast a slice of bread in your
toaster and then slice it
THROUGH the edge with a ser-
rated knife.
The firm toasted surface
guides the knife for easy cut-
1m.'
Butter the untoasted surfaces
and fill for a dainty, crisp sand-
wich.
N.A.T.
Honeychile, this is the hottest
hint to head our way in many a
moon!
We- tried it on three different
kinds of bread, and it worked
beautifully on all three.
What a boon this will be for
weight-watchers—who STARVE
tor a closed sandwich, and yet
must always eat them open-
fac a style!
T e same holds true for a
poa :hed or coddled egg that
jus doesn’t taste as good with-
out; toast under it.
l \ too, some people love
l 3te of toasted sandwiches.
Thfk'way you have toast on the
outside, but soft, moist bread
next to the filling. . .which
hold the spreads, etc.
It Is absolutely amazing the
way a serrated knife will cut
^ through a piece of toast while

it is still warm.
So those of you who are on
diets—shift gears with me right
now—and start slicing that slice
of toast In half.
See how wonderful it is. Just
lay toast flat on cutting board
when slicing.
If you don’t put anything on it
but a thinly slieed tomato, a
piece of lettuce, and a sliced
hard-boiled egg—at least you
FEEL like you have eaten a real
sandwich but have eaten only
half as much bread!
And for those of you who feel
that you cannot afford the lux-
ury of mayonnaise, yet don’t
like mustard. . .try squirting
some juice from a fresh lemon
or lime on the lettuce! Great.
And > 'Sink NAT was an ab-
solute uoll to share this won-
derful hint with all our friends.
I’ll love her always.

PJS. And for those of you who
don’t see your hint in this col-
umn immediately:
Please don’t fret.
We’ve been testing this one
four months. But isn’t it great?
So if you’ve got something up
your sleeve you’d like to share,
take hold of it—grab that pencil
and write to Heloise,Levelland

We’d love to share it. ,

Dear Heloise:
Those skirt holders that hold
several skirts with the pinch
pins are very hard to get on
the band of the skirt. One! is to
have strong fingert-especially
children.
Fold the skirt in thirds or half,
put a large safety pin through
the band of the skirt and pinch
the hanger pin over the top of
the safety pin. -.
This way you can get twice
as many skirts (or pants) on the
hanger, as only one hanger pin
is used tor each garment.

Dear Heloise:
When working in the kitchen
with my hands, such as making
pies, mixing meatloaf, etc.,
when I feel it is best to remove
my diamond rings, I place them
in a container of liquid jewelry
cleaner, or a solution of house-
hold ammonia diluted with wa-
ter.
I know they are in a safe
place, and when I put them on
again, they are dean and spark-
ling! 1

Dear Heloise:
After the kids were grown
and had left home, I was stuck
with a lot of three-quarter-size
sheets.
Know what I did?
They make the most wonder-
ful fitted bottom sheets. I took
an old fitted one, and tore it
apart for a pattern.
Some of the larger ones need
to be shortened, but otherwise
they are perfect.

DEAR ABBY: What can a wife do when her husband
makes a god out of money? Maybe it was Ludvig's hard
childhood that makes him the way he is, but should I hold
out any hope for a change? He says the only security there
is is money in the bank. He banks his paycheck before the
ink is dry on it. He gives me $25 a week for groceries to feed
a family of six. Believe me, I have to add fast or stand
red-faced before the cashier at the checkout counter if
I'm five cents short. 1 give Ludvig credit for owing no one
and having money in the bank, but we never have enough
heat in the house, and the kids and I go around looking
like welfare cases. With $66,863.55 In the bank, should our
boys have to put cardboard in the bottoms of their shoes?
WONDERING IN BUFFALO
DEAR WONDERING: A man who would deny his family
the bare necessities of life in order to build a bank balance
is sick. I would be more concerned about restoring some
balance to his life. Hold out a dime. You may have to slip
away to a pay phone and call a doctor.
DEAR ABBY: If an American man marries a European
woman does she automatically become an American citizen?
Answer in your column as soon as possible as a big decision
is predicated on the reply. DON’T SIGN THIS
DEAR DON’T: No one “automatically” becomes an Ameri-
can citizen by marrying an American. There is a three-year
waiting period. Then tests must be taken. If the tests are
passed, the person must then be “sworn in."
DEAR ABBY: A friend called me and asked me for a
recipe she’d heard I had. A mutual friend had told her it
was the most delicious casserole she'd ever tasted. Well,
it was just a can of this and a package of that. A child
could throw it together in five minutes. I was ashamed to
tell her it was so simple, so I said it had been in my family
for years and I promised my grandmother I wouldn’t give it
out. This has been on my mind for days, Abby, and I feel
terrible about it. I don’t usually lie. I’d really like to square
things with her, but I’m in so deep now I don’t know how
to, without making a liar out of myself.
TROUBLED CONSCIENCE
DEAR TROUBLED: Han't worry about “making a liar
out of yourself.’’ Yon already have. Now yon must Test
op. [She’ll understand.] Give her the recipe, and if it’s as
eaagr M yon say U Is. apt pi delicious ae she hpand it was.
' r a good tai
it will leave oody
taste la her month.
My old friend would have dou-
bled two notrump in the hand
shown today, taken from the re-
cent Intercollegiate Champion-
ships. He’d have beaten the con-
tract, but probably few college
students found the best defense.
Declarer wins the first trick
in dummy with the ten of clubs
and leads a low spade from
dummy. An inexperienced East
would play low, and South could
play either his low card or the
nine.
West would have to win with
the queen spades, and West
would be unable to continue
the attack on clubs. South would
get four spade tricks, two
hearts, one diamond and one
club, making his contract of two
notrump.
EAST’S PLAY
East can defeat the contract
by winning a spade trick to
lead a club through South. When
the low spade is led from dum-
my at the second trick, East
must put up the ten of spades.
If South plays low, East wins
the trick and leads a club at
once. If South plays the ace of
spades at the second trick, West
must drop the queen. Other-
wise, South would lead another
spade and let West win the
second spade trick with the
queen.
After the correct first trick
in spades, South cannot develop
the suit without giving a trick
to East. The defenders thus
get a spade and five clubs, de-
feating the contract.
