The president has appointed Hon.
David E. Bryant, of Sherman, to
succeed Judge Sabin in the eastern
district of Texas. This appoint-
ment is a surprise to all, for it was
generally believed that Chan Og-
den, of San Antonio, would get the
place.
Senator James B. Beck, of Ken
tucky, died in Washington on May
drd> at 4 p. in. of paralysis of the
heart. He had just arrived from
New York with his daughter and
fell dead in the Baltimore and Po-
tomac station. His death is a great
1608 to the country at large, for Sen-
ator Beck was one of the most pow-
erful of southern senators. His loss
is an irreparable one to the democ-
racy
The bill to appropriate #200,000
for an addition to the Federal build-
ing at Dallas, Texas, was vetoed by
President Harrison last wee* for
the reason that the amount was, as
he thought, more than necessary to
cover the expense of the improve-
ment. We wonder if Mr. Harrison
would have vetoed a like-bill for a
town jn hir native state? The
south don’t seem to suck much o!
of the Treasury milk nowadays. "
Judge Clark, ot Waco, is opposed
k> his old friend, Jim Hogg, for gov-
ernor and has recently expressed
himself in a three column newspa-
per article against Hogg. He does
not make it very clear who he wants
for governor, but it is generally
thought that if Hogg and “old
Throck’’ lock the convention fudge
Clark will be strongly in favor of
himself as a dark horse. The wily
Warwick watches the political pot
with a sleep!ess eye.

The Wichita Herald says : The
country press is doing a greater
work for Texas in the way of afford-
ing a true means of judging the
character of the state and bringing
immigration to her soil than the
daily press. Those who have visi-
ted the state and become interested
in its growth generally take the pa-
th* supreme power of the land,
while the laborer, the tiller of the
soil, the producer of life’s necessa-
ries, has to bend the knee and bow
to the sceptre of wealth.
These conditions have given birth
to various organizations for the pro-
tection of the laboring classes.
Trade’s unions and mutual alliances
have sprung up and rapidly- in-
creased in numbers and in fvower
until now we can plainly see that
the crisis is near at hand—the con-
flict between capital" and labor will
come and come soon. Both sides
are marshalling their forces and get-
ting retply for the fray. When will
the issue be settled ? Will the con-
test be at th** polh or in legislative
halls, or, as the alarmists believe,’
will it be upon the battle field ?
A revolution in our system of
government is inevitable and unless
it can be effected by the voters at
the polls we tremble at the pros-
pect. - The government has the
power to control the various chan-
