the moat important matters before
the cpmmis»ioners, eourt-are ques-
tions pf roads and bridges, and in
justice to this element such candi-
dates should be required to express
themselves upon these matters.
There is a pressing need of sev-
eral good bridges in the county.
There is a large element of the peo-
ple who believe that the county is
aible to erect these bridges and arc
willing and ready to pay the in-
creased taxes to secure them. The
sentiment of the county at large
can and should be tested in the
next election. Are wo for such im-
provements or against them. If
we are for them, let ns elect men
who will carry our ideas into effect,
if against (hem. let os elect men
who wilt vote against them. It is
but justice that the voter should
know what the candidate will do
and how he will if alerted
ROADS AMD BRIDGES.
In the last issue of Lke Texas
Western a correspondent signing
himself “Fanner” writes an inter-
esting letter on the subject of a road
law. He advocates the repeal of
the- present system, the division of
each county into four or five roa< i pre-
cincts; the employ rafent of a ttyf^
visor for each precinct at a stipula-
ted gum per month, said supervisor
to be appointed by the grand jury
at the first term in each year. The
supervisor is to have power to hire
help and is forced to keep his roads
and bridges in good repair. To
meet these expenses the present sa-
loon tax is to be abolished and each
county shall be authorized to levy
a tax of $1,000 per annum for each
agloon, and a poll tax^erf $2.00 per
capita, is to be levied, all of which
is to go to the cuunty school fund.
Thia plan is interesting but full of j
defects. In the first place the coun- j
ties that are mostly in need of roads |
will not be able by this plan to pr6-'
cure from the sources named suffi-
cient money to keep up the roads,
