The Graham Leader.
J. W: GRAVES. Proprietor.
Hon. W. 8. Pendleton defeated
!)r. Broiles for mayor of Ft. Worth
by a majority of over seven hun-
dred votes. The only ward in the
city, carried by Broilcs, was the
“bloody third,” which is a com
pliinent to the man and his party.
The democrats elected their entire
ticket and dark-lanternisiu in Fort
Worth has received a black eye
from which it will never recover.
The Gazette and Mail deserve cred-
it and Fort Worth should credit
them with Pendleton’s election.

Mk. Editoet The .meeting of
the public road convention at Dal-
las on Tuesday, the 8th, will doubt-
less start a movement which wflT
.result in a change in the road laws
of the-state. It is the object of the
meeting to devise a system which
will improve the public roads. The
county judges and county commis-
sioners of many counties will attend
in a body and the present rood laws
will he fully discussed by them.
They will doubtless recommend a
change to the next legislature and
perhaps make an iss te in tho com -
ingelection upon.it. However that
may he throughout the state at large
it is an issue already in this county
—an issue which cannot he success-
fully dodged in our county and pre-
cinct election next November. The
people will demand an expression
and will vote as they feel on this
matter. The idea of building some
good bridges in the ebunty is ridi-
culed ny some people-*—those w)h>
do not need bridges usually. Those
who arc against bridge building are
mostly men who drive their pro-
duce to market on mustang pontes.
Of course the cattle man does not
want bridges. He don’t want “nes-
tnrs” in the county either, and fears
public improvement will bring in
immigration and do away with “free
grass.” Then there is a class of
farmers even who don’t need any
better ruads. They are the men
who are able to market their crops
in a half-bushel basket, their prin-
cipal products being the eggs and f
butter the housewife happens to i

“How many people stop to consider
that a journal is the index of the I
town and section where published?!
The more influential, attractive and !
powerful its existence, the greater
its area for. good. It is the great
lever of a city’s prosperity and pro-
gression. It malceS known its aFt
tractions abroad, it proclaims the
status of affairs at home. A jour-j
nal’s usefulness, like every husi-l
ness plant, depends upon its pat- ^
milage, and the people make it what ||| | j \
it is, by thhir support and eneour- fj fj
agement.” There are people prone I
to imagine that identity of interest
or the fraternity of the guild prompts
newspapers to reprint and endorse
sentiments like the foregoing. But
truer words were never written than
that a town or city is judged abroad
by its Ideal press and the local press
is just what that community makes I
it. There are men and firms in!
Waco we are glad to say who have !
appreciated the truth of this all long *
