The Odem Owls and Lady Owls
both took the second place trophies at
the 29th annual Vaquero Invitational
Tournament giving the boys team
their first and second wins of the sea-
son and putting the girls team in the
running for the district playoffs.
The Varsity boys team got a late
start after waiting through a first
round bye. Their first opponent was
the Kingsville Academy Pride who
beat the Owls in their first season
game but did not show the same kind
of on-court presence in their second
meeting. The Owls took the game
with a decisive victory putting up 66
points against the Pride’s 47. Derrick
Rramal lead the team in scoring with
17 points while David Lee Morales
and Arnold Maldonado chipped in 13
and eight points respectively.
“The team shot the ball well and
controlled the boards with 38
rebounds all together,” said Head
Coach Paul Yuma.
The Owls faced off with the tourna-
ment host San Diego, who kept it
close. Both teams started off strong
defensively in the first quarter. The
Owls only managed two points and
the Vaqueros were only able to score
four points.

quarter scoring 20 points while the
Vaqueros scored 16. At half time,
Odem held the lead 22-20 as they
made their way to the locker room.
The second half saw several lead
changes as San Diego was deter-
mined to win on their home court.
The Owls kept their poise and contin-
ued on their win streak, taking the
final lead in the fourth quarter to end
the game 52-49. Maldonado lead the
team in scoring with 17 points fol-
lowed by Morales who had 13 points.
Trevor clenney also came up big with
five points and nine rebounds.
