Welcome to the 117th Annual Meeting
A s a Fort Worth native, I am pleased to welcome you to my hometown for the 117th
Texas State Historical Association Annual Meeting.
Under the leadership of Carl Moneyhon, the Program Committee has done an excellent
job of organizing this year's program. Forty-one sessions offer you the opportunity to
engage with leading authorities in such fields as Mexican Borderlands, Texas Revolution,
women in Texas history, oral history, African American history, and more.
Special events this year begin with the Women in Texas History Luncheon on Thursday.
Laura McLemore will speak about "Adele Looscan and the TSHA" following the
presentation of the Liz Carpenter Award. The Presidential Reception to welcome Gregg
Cantrell as the 2013 President will be held at the Ashton Depot with facsimiles of the
Texas Legation papers from Texas Christian University's Center for Texas Studies on
display. After the reception, take a stroll through downtown, where you will find an
abundance of restaurants and see Fort Worth's night life.
Start Friday with the Book Lovers' and Texana Collectors' Breakfast, featuring a
discussion on "Collecting Texas" by Thomas Kreneck and Gerald Saxon. At noon, the
Association will honor significant contributions to the study of Texas history at the
Fellows Luncheon and Presentation of Awards, which is followed by a presentation from
Char Miller on "Water Conservation in Texas." The Association's business meeting
will follow the luncheon. I highly recommend you attend the business meeting to learn
about what is happening in the Association and to vote on amendments to the bylaws.
In partnership with Heritage Auction Galleries, the Live Auction will be held Friday
afternoon. A portion of every sale will be donated to the Association. Friday evening is
the President's Banquet, where I will address you one last time as president.
I encourage you to take one of the Saturday tours to see what more Fort Worth has to
offer. Doug Harmon will lead a tour through downtown followed by the Stockyards and
its cattle drive. Take a guided tour through the Amon Carter with former director Ron
Tyler. Or you can learn more about Tarrant County with a tour of the courthouse and the
Tarrant County Archives.
A special thanks goes to the Local Arrangements Committee chaired by Paula Tyler,
the Program Committee chaired by Carl Moneyhon, and the Women in Texas History
Luncheon chaired by Stephanie Cole.
I hope you will enjoy the Annual Meeting in Cowtown. Discover the latest research for
the work you do, expand your knowledge, make the connections between the past and the
present, and reenergize your commitment to Texas history.
