Description

A complete set of unbound sheets of the last printing of the Pickering Horace. The Horace was originally printed by Pickering in 1820 as the first of his Diamond Classics, and are a landmark in the world of miniature books and printing. This set of sheets are a remarkable survival, giving insight into the printing and binding process. The sheets are quarter-sheet impressions, each sheet holding 8 front-and-back leaves (16 pages) of the text. The sheets have been folded into gathers, and left thus. Author

  • Horace Quintus Horatius Flaccus, (Born Venosa, December 8, 65 BC - Died Rome, November 27, 8 BC), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus, and is considered one of the greatest Latin poets. Son of a freedman, Horace was born on a small farm and was educated in Rome and Greece. During the Civil Wars, Horace served under Brutus and fought in the Battle of Philippi. He returned to Italy under the amnesty, and found his estate confiscated. He obtained a post with the Treasury, and was able to work on his poetry. His first work, Satires, was done about 35BC. He became a member of the literary circle of Virgil, Lucius Varius Rufus, and Maecenas - through whom he was introduced to the Emperor Augustus. He received an estate as a gift, in the Sabine Hills, which he wrote about frequently. At his death, he left the estate to Augustus for Imperial needs. The estate still exists. Horace worked in Greek meters, from relatively simple forms to many of the most complex. His work places him as one of the most important poets of the Classical era.

Illustrator

  • Stothard, Thomas. Thomas Stothard (Born London, August 17, 1755 - April 27, 1834) English painter and engraver, the son of an innkeeper. Apprenticed to a draughtsman of patterns for brocaded silks, he spent his free time illustrating the works of his favorite poets. Some of these drawings won praise, and in 1778 he became a student of the Royal Academy, of which he became a full academician in 1794. He is best known for illustrations, mostly engraved, although he did other works, including small oil paintings and designs for interiors.

  • Corrall, C. (Charles) Charles Corrall, London printer who partnered with William Pickering to produce the Diamond Classics, using a "diamond type" of ca. 4.5 pont size. Corrall's work is impressive, and he printed Diamond Classics in English, Latin, Italian, and Greek.

Publisher

  • William Pickering
    Publisher Info: William Pickering (1796-1854) was the son of a titled father and a lady not his wife. He was raised by a tailor and his wife, and was apprenticed at 14 to booksellers John and Arthur Arch. By 1820, Pickering had established his own bookstore, specializing in antiquarian and older books. That year he also began publishing, for which he would become famous. One of the books published that first year was his Horace, printed by Charles Corrall in the 4.5 point "Diamond Type", the beginnings of the Diamond Classics miniature books. The novelty of these volumes, along with the quality of his other publications made him a major figure of the publishing world. Pickering was a prolific publisher, with high standards and discriminating taste. He is credited with a number of firsts, including the first edition binding of a title in cloth. He died in 1854, and his private library was sold at auction over a period of 28 days, consisting of 9,711 lots.
