Dear Readers,
For the first time since we began publishing,
this month we found it necessary to reduce
Womansight from 12 to 8 pages. The reason is
simple: lack of money.
Over the past few months production costs
have risen and, although we have tried, we have
not been able to generate the much needed extra
income. We are now asking for your help.
Our primary goal is to keep Womansight alive
for Texas women. That means publishing an 8
page paper until our debts are paid and we can
afford to again publish 12 pages each month.
Since June 1980, Womansight—News For
Texas Women has been hard at work expanding
the communication network among Texas
women. We help support women in business by
providing a loyal and attentive audience for
advertisers. We help support women’s culture by
offering a space for women artists and writers to
share their ideas and work. By providing informa-
tion about women’s issues and organizations,
Womansight helps support an ever growing and
changing women’s community in Texas.
Communication is essential to any thriving
community, and Womansight has become a vital
part of the communication network in the Texas
women’s community. We provide coverage of
women’s events and news of upcoming events.
We keep you informed about the progress of
women’s rights, and about threats to our rights.
When new women’s organizations are formed,
Womansight lets you know. And when establish-
ed groups are planning something new, we let
you know about that, too. We want and need to
do more, but we need your help.
Womansight is not funded by or affiliated with
any organization. It is an independent corpora-
tion, owned and operated by women. Many
women have given their time and talent to pro-
duce Womansight, and although most of the
staff is volunteer, money is needed to cover pro-
duction costs of each issue.
Advertising revenue, subscriptions and
newsstand sales provide some sources of in-
come. But now we are finding it necessary to ask
for your financial support.
Subscribe to Womansight, or give a friend a
gift subscription. Advertise your business, ser-
vice or organization in the pages of Womansight.
And, contribute whatever amount you can to
Womansight so that we can continue to serve
Texas women—$300 pays for typesetting one
issue; $200 pays for printing one issue; $100
covers one month’s postage; $50 provides three
months of Her Say news service; $25 pays for
two months of long distance telephone calls..
Womansight needs your supportive contribu-
tion today. We want to grow and expand, and
give the Texas women’s community the
coverage it deserves. Please be a part of that

To the Editor:
Nancy Peterson is to be congratulated on her
excellent article outlining the women’s resources
available at the new Central Research Library of
Dallas Public Library. It is my hope that Ms. Peter-
son’s article will convince researchers that Dallas
Public Library’s women’s holdings are as varied
and complete as any found in area univer-
sities—perhaps even more so. In addition, as Ms.
Peterson points out, Dallas Public Library is con-
tinually strengthening its women’s collection
through the acquisition of more books,
photographs, films, archives, and oral histories.
A word about the latter. Oral history—the pro-
cess of tape-recording interviews with
eyewitnesses to history and of making these in-
terviews available to researchers—has become a
widely accepted method of studying various
women’s topics, from biography to family life.
Your readers may be interested to know that the
Library’s oral history program not only conducts
such interviews, but also offers technical and
organizational assistance to groups or individuals
interested in initiating their own oral history pro-
jects. Anyone interested in learning more about
oral history should contact the Library’s oral
historian at (214) 749-4149.
The Dallas Public Library is doing everything
within its means to preserve the rich history of
Dallas as well as the stories of the women and
men who shaped that history. Ms. Peterson’s
thoughtful article will undoubtedly help us in our
endeavor.
Sincerely,
Gerald D. Saxon, Oral Historian
