Portland News
About The Portland News
A winner of four 2017 Texas Press Association awards, The Portland News represents the citizens of Nueces and San Patricio Counties, in addition to the coastal city of Portland. Originally the dream of land developer John G. Willacy and named after Portland, Maine, building on the city began in 1891 with the establishment of a hotel intended to support new housing construction and purchasing in the area. Since its incorporation in 1949, the population of Portland has grown from 1,200 to a little over 15,000 residents.

Addition of The Portland News was made possible by a Ladd & Katherine Hancher Foundation grant awarded to the Bell/Whittington Public Library.
