If State Paess will come over
this way he will find the iron in-
terest on the move no booming
In a short while something of in
tsreBt will be heard
More visitors are pricing proper
ty here than any time in years
past Especially is the inquiry for
business property on the increase
The water and iron is doing this
In a year or so changes will be
greater than any one ever dreamed
of
In place of automobiles the capi
talistB of Jefferson are investing in
gasoline propellers They are
having the finest time imaginable
When they are all going one not
knowing what the reports are
would think another battle of the
Sea of Japan was going on using
only the rapid firing guns
Geo Wharton Pepper has been
employedby the United StateB
Circuit Court at Philadelphia to
collect 890000 from J Edwards
Addicks with 6 per cent interest to
date from December 1897 Bos-
ton NewsBureau
If there is anything in a name
the Court evidently intended to
make It very hot for Mr Addicks
Erie railroad bonds worth 116
000 were recently found in Cleve-
land in the ruinB of an old build
ing The bonds were originally
worth 40000 accumulated inter
est bus increased the amount to
116000 The road tried to find
these bonds in 1876 1879 to retire
them Boston News Bureau
Such carelessness is unpardona-
ble To whom would the bonds
belong
If the politicians could only
learn to study the questions which
would build up the country instead
of playing to the gallerys the coun-
try would be more benefited The
worBt possible blow which can be
given TexaB now is any law which
will cause capital to hesitate on-
coming to the State or make that
which is here uneasy TexaB needs
at least 500 cotton mills furniture
factories boiler and machine shops
concrete works canning factories
cotton tie and rolling mills pipe
foundries In fact a factory for
everything she has in the raw state
to supply the home demand Just
how any one can stand before a
people so much in the need of cap
ital as Texas is and do anything
which will in the least frighten it
away is indeed strange The raw
material of the State stands in the
need of millions of dollars to man-
ufacture it

RAILWAYS AND WATERWAYS
Even the railway magnates are
looking to the waterways for relief
The thinking ones realize that the
only way to avoid freight block-
ades and give the railways relief
is to utilize the navigable streams
If this is not done every trunk line
will have to have at least four
tracks and rolling stock in propor-
tion to handle the commerce of
the country It is questionable if
this will do it twenty years from
now The natural conclusion is
that the commerce of the country
will increase more rapidly in the
next twentyfive years than it has
in the past twentyfive year3
therefore to handle it will require
Buch an increase in railway prop
erty that to find the money to
make the improvement may be a
question The wealth of the coun-
try will of course increase and it
may not be a difficult proposition
to finance and build railways
enough to handle the commerce of
the country As the country in
creases in wealth the surplus
wealth will as a matter of course
seek good paying investments If
the waterways can be used and it
may be demonstrated that when a
canal is possible it may be cheap
er to construct it than the same
mileage of railway considering the
cost of repairs betterments and so
forth Every railway in the coun-
try has to be yirtually rebuilt ev-
ery few years So doeB all the mo-
tive power and rolling stock
Therefore the canal may yet come
in on its economical proposition
There is no doubt but the country
is now looking to the water ways
for relief
