Mercedes Society Women Act as Hostess to Delegation of Nations Well Known Club Workers
WALLEY ENTERTAINS CLUB
WOMEN FROM ALL PARTS
OF NATION; DELEGATION
ARRIVES THIS MORNING.
Mercedes will have the privilege of
entertaining approximately 100 wom-
en from various states of the union
today, when the delegation from the
National Federation of Womens
Clubs, which has been in session in
San Antonio for the past week, ar-
rives for its visit in the Valley.
Mrs. Fred Hard Wright of Merce-
des, president of the Valley Federa-
tion of Women’s Clubs, and Mrs. Al-
bert H. Kalbfleisch, president of the
Mercedes Music club, will be with the
delegation during the entire day, from
the time of arrival in Edinburg, early
this morning, by way of the Southern
Pacific, through the Valley from Mis-
sion to Brownsville, with dinner in
Matamoros, the delegation leaving
Brownsville late tonight.
The delegation will be entertained
in Mercedes from 11:30 to 12:30. The
party will be shown the city, and will
be given a refreshing punch drink at
the Elk’s Club, and each member will
be presented a souvenir jar of mar-
malade prepared by a local marma-
A lade organization, made up of club
women. Mrs. J. C. Shaw and Mrs. L.
T. Hoyt will act as hostesses at the
club.
Club women from Mercedes will
meet the delegation in McAllen in the
morning, and will act as hostesses
until the party reaches Harlingen at
1 o’clock. Among those who are act-
ing as hostesses are Mesdames G. C.
Commons, H. E. Bennett, H. T. Stot-
ler, Katherine Chaddick, H. E. Sugg,
Charlie Hupp, W. H. Carlisle, Harry
Lawson, George Markham, A. N.
Brown, R. H. Smith and J. C. Shaw.
After being entertained in Merce-
des, the party will be taken to Har-
lingen, where luncheon will be served
at the Reese-Wil-Mond and Moore ho-
tels. The women of Cameron county
will drive the party to Brownsville
and Matamoros.
At Harlingen there will be hostess-
es from each town to entertain the
guests. Mercedes hostesses will be
Mrs. Katherine Chadick and Mrs. J.
J. Murray. Mrs. J. C. Shaw is chair-
man of the transportation for Merce-
des, assisted by Mrs. Albert H. Kalb-
fleisch.
will speak at the" Flag Day program
of the D. A. R., June 14th. It is
probable that she will also speak at
the home demonstration encampment,
June 15th. Mrs. Etta Ringgold, Hi-
dalgo County Home demonstration
aggnt, is particularly anxious to ar-
range for Mrs. Minier’s lecture at
the encampment as her particular ac-
tivity with the national federation is
for bettering the farm homes.
Carter-Atwood Wedding
Takes Place In
Edinburg
The marriage of Miss Rema At-
wood of Edinburg to Ross Carter of
Mercedes, Sunday morning, June 3rd
at nine o’clock at the home of the
bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. W.
Atwood, is of interest to friends in
the Valley cities, as the bride, who
attended high school in Edinburg,
and received her degree from Baylor
University, taught in the Donna, La
Feria, Mercedes and Edinburg schools.
The groom, the only son of Dr. and
Mrs. T. W. Carter, a graduate of
the Mercedes high school, attended
Baylor University, and is now owner
of a farm and citrus groVe near Ed-
inburg.
The living room of the Atwood
home was beautifully arranged with
ferns and pink and white roses, the
simplicity of the improvised altar of
ferns and roses in keeping with the
early morning wedding.
The ring ceremony was performed
by Reverend G. S. Kennard of Ed-
inburg, in the presence of the imme-
diate family and a few intimate
friends. The bridal music was given
by Mrs. H. C. Baker of Edinburg who
sang, “O, Promise Me,” and Mrs.
Fred Flanders, who played the wed-
ding march. Miss Esther Ruth At-
wood and Graham Killough served as
attendants.
The bride wore a rose-beige canton
three-piece suit and a small tailored
lace and horsehair hat. Her bouquet,
a sheaf of beautifully selected, long-
stemmed pink rose buds, was grown
especially for the occasion by the
groom. '
After a short honeymoon trip, Mr.
and Mrs. Carter will be at home in
Edinburg.
Arranging Transportation for Club Women
Distinguished Club
Woman Visits in Valley
Mrs. William Minier, former pres-
ident of the state federation of wom-
en’s clubs of Nebraska, will arrive at
the week end to be a guest of Mrs.
Walter Weaver of Donna, who is ac-
tive in Valley club activities. Mrs.
Minier is a member of the board of
general directors of the National
Federation of Women’s clubs.
While in the Valley Mrs. Minier
Presbyterian Bible
School
Enrollment of the Presbyterian Bi-
ble school, which was opened to chil-
dren of other denominations, reach-
ing 78 Wednesday, was closed Thurs-
day morning, according to Reverend
C. P. Owen, pastor of the Presbyter-
ian church.
The school, which lasts for two
weeks, is already exceeding expecta-
tions, says Reverend Owen, who hopes
for a community daily vacation Bi-

Since Mrs. Ralph Buell’s resigna-
tion as president, due to Mr. and Mrs.
Buell’s moving away from Mercedes,
Mrs. H. E. Bennett has been elected
president by the organization, and
Mrs. R. E. Lee has been named sec-
ond vice president to take the place
made vacant by Mrs. Bennett.
The members in attendance were
Mesdames M. Agnew, H. E. Bennett,
William Copeland, Katherine Chadick,
F. N. Clifford, W. W. DeCell, V. H.
Holme, Allan Hvistendahl, E. H. Ka-

Anouncement Party In
Weslaco for Bride
of Month
A bridge party given by Mrs. Wal-
lace Frances and Mrs. W. F. Pow-
ell at which time the approching mar-
riage of Miss Cordelia Frances and
John Graves was announced for June
28th, was held at Mrs. Powell’s home
in Weslaco, Tuesday afternoon. Guests
from Mercedes were Mesdames John
C. Jones, John A. Phelan, P. W. Per-
kins and W. L. Bradbury.
Local Walther League
Entertains Valley
Organizations
Valley Walther League organiza-
tions were entertained by the Merce-
des Walther League, Sunday, at the
South Side Grammar school. Services
were held in the afternoon. At 6
o’clock a picnic supper was held, af-
ter which a social hour was enjoyed.
A motion picture and lecture on Lu-
ther’s life was given at 8 o’clock.
Walther league members from Mc-
Allen, Alamo, Weslaco, Mercedes,
Harlingen, San Benito and Browns-
ville were in attendance.
Mrs. Morrison Will
Continue Bible Teaching
In Weslaco
Mrs. Grant Morrison will continue
her work as teacher in Bible in the
Stephen F. Austin Grammar school in
Weslaco, next school session. The
work is given under the auspices of
the Weslaco federation of missionary
societies.
Methodist Auxiliary
Does Not Meet
The Methodist Auxiliary did not
meet for its monthly business ses-
sion Tuesday, due to inclement weath-

Hesse, a state worker in the Presby-
terian church. Mrs. Leland Matth-
ews has charge of the beginners class,
Mrs. Ethel Patterson has charge of
the primary department, and Mrs.
Diehl has charge of the junior de-
partment.
Instructors include Mrs. W. W, De-
Cell, Mrs. W. C. Swarner, Mrs. Wil-
liam Copeland, Mrs. H. T. Stotler,
Miss Catherine Stotler, Reverend and
Mrs. C. P. Owen, Miss Vera Barry
and Miss Mary Lee Kern.
The classes meet from 8:15 to 11:-
15. Instruction is given in Bible
study and sacred music courses. The
recreational courses include wood-
working, sewing and basket weaving.

Miss Pierce has been a member of
the faculty of the public schools for
the past year. She is a graduate of
Westmoreland College in San Anto-

Mr. Lewis is a civil engineer for the
Southern Pacific and has a number
of friends in Mercedes, having visit-
ed here on several occasions.
After several weeks in Colorado
the couple will make their home in
Victoria.
Reverend and Mrs. Pierce and
daughter, Misses Ruth and Margaret,
returned to Mercedes Tuesday, hav-
ing spent the past week in San An-
tonio.

came the bride of Wilbur Lewis of
Victoria, Saturday evening, June 2nd,
