OTA Students Participate in Mexico Trip
By Beth Barham - - ’• •
On February 23, the Occupational Therapy Assistant program represented SPC on a mission trip
to Piedras Negras, Mexico. During this day-long event,-medical, dental and rehabilitation profes-
sionals provided care to the economically disadvantaged. The biannual health fair is sponsored by
the Christian Medical and Dental Association of San Antonio.
Student participation was organized by faculty sponsor Larry Duron. Participants were Level
II Students Sandy D£lk, La Verne Robertson-Gold and Beth Barham.
OTA students contributed to the effort by signing in clients, distributing donated toys to the chil-
dren, and repairing tod “customizing” donated wheelchairs, walkers and crutches. The rehabilita-
tion team served about 60 children tod adults.
^ The experience of working side-by-side with other medical professionals to provide services to
the less fortunate is a great foundation on which to build our future careers in health care.
Student Appreciation Event Held at LAFB
UL
On February 12, SPC staff members par-
ticipated in the first annual “Student Appreci- >
ation Day” on Lackland AFB. The event was
sponsored by SPC and other schools offer-
ing programs and services on Lackland. The
event was held to recognize military students
currently pursuing degrees and certificates
and to applaud the effort expended in the pur-
suit of those education goals. Additionally,
it was an opportunity to recognize students’
hard work, sacrifices and dedication and to
congratulate them in their accomplishments.
... In all, 122 students came out to the event.
“It was nice to give a little something back
to our students” stated Betsy Hamilton, Off-
Site Coordinator at Lackland for SPC.
SPC has been a presence oh LAFB for more
than 20 years. In that time, course offerings
have expanded to include all courses neces-
sary for students to be able to attain an Asso-
ciate of Arts degree in Liberal studies without
j leaving the base. Support services have also
expanded into a one-stop admissions, testing,
advising and registration center.
SPC has about 1,450 students registering
for approximately 2,500 courses annually on
base. “The base courses are open to everyone,
including civilian students from our main
campus” stated Hamilton. “I think students
are pleasantly surprised when they find out
- what we have to offer.” Lackland’s newest
SPC offerings will include Hybrid Internet
courses for this summer and fall semesters.

- Library Research Workshops Offered
By Jill Zimmerman
Feeling a little stressed about approaching
research paper deadlines? Short of time? Not
sure how to do the research? Let your friendly
SPC librarians help. Throughout March and
April the librarians will hold 30-minute li-
brary instruction sessions on the research pro-
cess, as well as schedule Individualized Re-
search Assistance (IRA) with students. Dates
and times will be announced in the library and
advertised throughout campus. Sessions will
include the following:
• Workshop 1: Discovery - Reading the as-
signment requirements and discovering what
resources will be needed. Choosing the top-
ics and finding words (search terms) to locate
sources of information. Search concepts, syn-
onyms andjelated terms will be discovered.
• Workshop 2: Identifying Resources - Iden-
tify what types of sources are required to meet
the needs of the assignment (scholarly vs. pop-
ular sources, primary vs. secondary sources);
discover which resources owned or subscribed
to by the library will meet the informational
need.
• Workshop 3: Accessing and Using Print/Elec-
tronic Books through the ACC Library Catalog
• Workshop 4: Accessing and Using Journal,
Magazine, Newspaper, and other E-Resources
through the Library Web Site or Library PALS
tab
• Workshop 5: Basic MLA Citation Style
• Workshop 6: Basic APA Citation Style
Call 531 -3345 or use Ask-A-Librarian from
the library’s web site for more information
(accd. edu/spc/adminArc/default. aspx).
Plan to attend one or more mini-sessions
and make completing that research assignment
stress-free!
Get Results Through Student Leadership Board
The Student Leadership Board is a program designed to transition students into becoming ad-
vanced student leaders. Our goal is to encourage and assist students in expressing their interests by
guiding them through the EGG (Encouraging Group Growth) process. Students will learn how to
operate a club, understand and work with different personalities, and obtain vital leadership skills.
Contact Board Advisor Kevin Schantz at kschantz@mail.accd.edu for more information.
EGG Workshop Topics include:
• Club Start Up: Instruction on filling out the paperwork necessary for starting up an organization
• Fundraising: Strategies to help organizations go beyond the bake sales
• How to Catch A Fish: A remarkable way to boost morale and improve results
• Embracing Diversity: Understanding how to work with different personality types
• Team Building: Learning how to grow within your organization and appreciate each others value
• Community Outreach: Preparing your club for success and civic responsibility
