AvASHlNGTON December 1. Ur.
Henry Van Dyke American minister to
the Netherlands back from hi poit on
a month's leave described to Secretary
Bryan today the earnest desire of Queen
Wilhelmina and the people of Holland for
the early ending of the European war.
Dr .Van Dyke denied an oft publlthed
report that he was the bearer of personal
letter from the queen relating to peace
but said he had reported to Mr. Bryan
merely on "the state ol mind" of the
people of Holland and condition gener-
ally in Europe as he had studied them.
After talking with Secretary Bryan for
an hour pr. Van Dyke Indicated clearly
that the present did not teem a propitious
moment to put forward definite proposals
for terms of peace.

Proceedings and Documents of Com-

Read Into Record Despite
Protests.
IHoutton Pott SpteM.)
AUSTIN'. Texas December 1. That
the larger part of the Texas Business
Men's association funds came from out-
side the State from "friends of Texas"
was a statement made today by B. B.
Cain president of tho association who
has been on tha stand slnoe yesterday
afternoon In th i hearing before Special
Commissioner llirry P. Blckler prelimi-
nary to trial of the state's injunction suit
against the assuolatlon. Mr. Cain also
told of a dinner at the Metropolitan
club In New York at which representa-
tives of the Biiainess Men's association
were present with Prank Trambull Theo
N. Vail and Frank A. Vanderllp but de-
nled that any statement in connection
with the control of Texas legislation
was made on that occasion. He said the
committee was in New York for the pur-
pose of getting funds for the association
ana mat it succeeded In getting consid-
erable money.
It developed at the hearing that J. A.
Arnold of Fort Worth former head of
the commercial secretaries and others
Identified in the office affairs of the as-
sociation are no longer connected with
the association and can not be made to
appear In the present suit. This how-
ever attorneys r0r the State say will
make development of the State's case
difficult.
SECRETARIES' ACTIVITIES
FIGURE IN RECORD.
Amid objections by the score Assistant
Attorney General Luther fc'lckels today
ead Into the record proceedings and docu-
ments relating to the activities of the
Commercial Secretaries' association which
was the predecessor of the Texas Busi-
ness Men's association. These objections
at times were so numerous and covered so
much ground that the attorney smiled as
they made them. Fo instance 'when Mr.
Nickels began reading a speech supposed
to have been delivered about 1&08 by John
Henry Klrby llie objections were first di-
rected to the fact that the speech was not
sufficiently Identified; that the copy from
which Mr. Nickels waa reading was not
properly verified for use a evidence; that
wjaat Mr. Klrby said In that speech could
not be binding upon the defendants In the
dissolution suit against the Texas Busi-
ness Men's assoclatlpn; that It was deliv-
ered before the defendant association was
formed that what Klrby said waa Imma-
terial to the isfues in the present case;
that-he was nut directed by the associa-
tion to make the speech nor could he
have been prevented by the association
since K was not tiien in existence. Nearly
the same ground was covered In all of
these objections which were renewed
every time anything relating to the old
Commercial Secretaries' association was
brought up. . v
ALLEGE CONTINUATION
OF OLDER ORGANIZATION.
It Is evident that the theory of the at-
torney general Is that the Texaa Business
llen't association ia merely the same
old organisation as the Commercial Sec-
retaries association tohtlnued trrftler a

to be for the advancement of commercial
interest of Texas. It was really opposed
to all laws strictly regulating corpora-
tions. Increasing corporate taxes further
regulating railroads or extending prohibi-
tion of the liquor traffic. The State's
theory Is that "big business" maintained
under the cover of this educational or-
ganization an instduoua lobby that not
only worked at Austin but sought to
control public opinion on political issues
through sending plate matter to the rural
preai.
EDUCATIONAL WORK
DEFENSE'S THEORY.
The theory of the defense Is that the
organization did the educational work H
set out to accomplish that the individual
clews of aome of those connected with It
are being seized upon In an effort to
make political capital by erecting a straw
man to knock down. It 1 evident from
the tactic of counsel for the numerous
defendant that they think the attorney
generals' department Is merely trying to
build up a newspaper record and not one
for use in the courts. The record will be
very long under the plan of prosecution
being used and It is understood to be the
Intention of counsel for the defendant
to make it so extremely long by the time
they get through that no numan being
would be likely to care to read It.

MASONIC OFFICERS WERE

Annual Session of Grand lodge.
(Houston Post Sptcial.)
WACO. Texas December 1. Over 900
members of the Masonic order attended
the meetings of the State bodies today
in the grand lodge building.
The seventy-ninth grand annual com-
munication of the most worshipful grand
lodge of Texas convened at 10 o'clock this
morning. Grand Master A. W. Houston
of fcan Antonio presided. Other officers
present were Jewel P. Lightfoot Austin

Much comment is heard among the
out of town masons concerning the in-
creased hotel facilities In Waco since the
last meeting of the State bodies. It Is
thought the new 10 story hotel erected
by Mayor James w. Hiprtns will avoid
future rumor of moving the grjandwere awakened by a scuffling on . the
lodge to some oiner ctiy. s
It Is understood the committeeman en-
larging the temple will make no definite
report this year. It Is thought by many
the present auditorium can be consider-
ably enlarged either by reducing the hall
space and adding more seats or by add-
ing to the north or east sides of the
building which would not cost very much
and afford ample facilities for many years
to come.
