The rain storm ot Wednesday is
said to have extended as far north
as the central line of Kansas, and
south to Houston, and from I*ort
W-Orth on the west to the east line ot
the State. It was a soaking rain
and just the thing needed by the
farmers. _____
Aug. Belmont, the well known
banker, was run over by a grocer’s
wagon in Fifth avenue, New York,
Tuesday morning, through careless-
ness of the driver, and bably injured
in the head, hip and groin. Bel-
mont’s carriage, from which he had
just alighted, was also wrecked.
The story that Lord Lytton, vice-
roy of India, gave a gold medal to
Miss Cooke, the circus rider, well
known in Texas, is officially denied.
The medal was prepared as an ad-
vertising dodge, and the young wo-
man has been compelled to erase the
inscription. _
It would seem that the backbone
of the darkey exodus is broken and
that beyond a few stragglers no
more of the colored people are de-
sirous of journeying to Kansas. Re-
ports had found their way back to
the benighted brethren of the plan-
tations that Kansas was not a land
of milk, hoecakes and honey as had
been so often stated, but a clime
where the earth remained frozen
nine months out of the year, and the
Indians roamed free witli a thirst for
kinky scalps. Several who came
up in the early part of the season
have obtained a few dollars and re-
turned, and are now content to re-
main where they can at least earn
their bread without any serious diffi-
culty, and the story they tell has
had a most salutary eflect upon the
others at home.
Those who seem to know, express
the most perfect confidence in the
success of Edison’s electric light,
and sav it will do away with gas in
all our large cities and towns on ac-
count of the cheapness of.the process
of producing and the superiority of
the light. The Professor has kept
his lamps burning for nineteen con-
secutive hours, without the slightest
change. Sixteen of the lamps have
been in constant use, it is said, in his
factory at Menlo Park. They are
simply a small coil of platinum wire
placed in a glass buFb no larger than
a russet apple. The delay in bring-
ing the light before the public has
been, according to Edison, the want
of a perfect generator of electricity.
This difficulty being overcome, the
electric light, he asserts, is now an
assured success, and can be made
three times cheaper than gas. He
proposes soon to demonstrate all he
claims as true by burning five hun-
dred lights in the house at Menlo
Park and keep them aglow night
and day until the stockholders are
satisfied.
The Meroer Heir’ll Suit.
1844 a colony wag granted land for
* colony by Suip Houston j \be gov-
erh^i. InY854 an injunction was
sued hut in thfe names bf the Mercer
heirs 5b restrain th4 Comifljssioner of
the land office from issuing any
patents for lands embraced in the
claim. An answer was made by de-
murer setting up that a state officer
could not be so sued, anti the statute
of limitations also’fflcfaile^/' 1 he de-
murrer was overruled and now the
case is tA corn's up oil itshiiefits'. '
The amount of land Covered by
the claimt is about 80,000 acres sit-
uated in the northeast part of th’e
country.
There may be no ycal cause for
alarm, but it is certainly the duty of
the state to spare 110 expense to pro-
tect the title she has Soiffi or failing
in that to hold her grantees tyurmtess.

New York, April 23.—August
Belmont made a neat little profit in
the syndicate business, without much
effort. He was not made one of the
original members, but a personal
friend insisted upon having $10,-
000,000 reserved for him subject to
his co-operation. When Belmont
was called upon Saturday he at first
intended refusing to take the bonds,
because lie had not been asked at
first, but meantime the rise in the
market had already made a profit on
the bonds of $25,000. lie waived
etiquet and agreed to take whatever
he could get under the allotment,
which is supposed to be $5,000,000.

Hearing Restored by a Cyclone.
Mr. J. B. Cooper, who was injur-
ed in the Lisbon cyclone, and whose
house was burned by lightning has
recovered his hearing, being almost
entirely deaf prior to the storm.
During the storm he was struck on
the head with a large hail stone
which fell with great force, knock-
ing him down. To what source his
recovery is due it is hard to say,
though it is attributed by his friends
to the electricity that filled the air«
His hearing is almost as good as it
ever was, and he has about receive; -
ed from the effects of the storm.

In the whole catalogue of diseases there
are but few which create more trouble
and misery. The piles are small tumors
which form in the lower end of the bow-
els. Sometimes these little tumors bleed
at every action of the bowtJs and others
are unattended dry the bloody discharge;
hence the ' distinction! — bleeding and
bloody piles. In. most cases they are ex-
tremely sensitive and painful, causing se-
vere anguish at each motion of the
bowels. They are generally caused by
costiveness, intemperance in leafing and
drinking, sedentary habits, and the too
frequent usfe of drastic pills containing
aloes. Treatment.—Leave oft the use of
all pills except Dr. Hart s,—and mixtures
containing aloes; keep the bowels gently
open with Hart’s Anti-bilious Discovery,
and use a lotion made from a handful of
witch hazel, steeped in a quart of hot wa-
ter twice a day, applh d to the afflicted
parts when cool.
