Holy Name Catholic Church Celebrates 75th Anniversary

THE HOLY NameC atholic Church of
Happy celebrated its 75th Diamond Jubi-
lee Anniversary on Sunday. September
15th. with special services, dinner at the
church and reception from 3 to 5 that was
open to the public.
The reception also honored Monsig-
nor Erpen for having been given that title
at special services in Amarillo on Sep-
tember 1st Chela Perez was honored for
having received the papal medal Pro
Ecclesia et Pontifice (for Church and
Pontiff) her plaque and pictures were on
display at the registration table
Mrs Arch Johnson registered guests.
Punch, anniversary cake, mixed nuts and
mints were served from a table covered
w ith a w hite lace edged cloth. Fresh flow-
ers decorated all the tables around the
room.
Ray Nobile of Tulia. won the candle
wick quilt and pillow The church com-
posed and published a history complete
with pictures of the present members.
I he church began in 1910 w hen ranch
land was being broken up into farms
Real estate agents were bringing prospec-
tive settlers into the Panhandle-Plains on
excursion trains Father D H Dunn of
Amarillo cooperated with the firm of L.
C Klein to bring German Catholic
Farmers from the Midwest to Happy
I he settlers wanted to be sure to have a
Catholic church Each Catholic settler
gave 525 00 per quarter section of land to
build a church The Santa Fe Railway
built a line from Amarillo to Lubbock in
1906 Holy Name Church was the first
C atholic church built along that line In
dry vears some people moved away, but
others came and the church is still active.

HAPPT C OWBOYS held Valley Pa-
triots to a score of 8 to 16 last Friday
evening in the Cowboy Corral. Coach
Fair thought the Cowboys defense play ed
extremely well Three who showed out-
standing defense in the film were Ernie
Jordan, left defensive end. Jimmie Phil-
lips. middle linebacker; and Kelly Mc-
Donald. right tackle
Happy Cowboys eradicated the Patri-
ots offense in the fourth quarter on their
drive for a touchdown Mace Middleton
passed to Justin Clark to put the ball
within a yard of the goal line and then ran
into pay dirt himself on the next play
T he two point conversion was made with
a pass from Mace to Dway ne Simons
Happy had ten first downs to Valley's
fourteen. Cowboys had 75 yards rushimz
to \ alley's 145 52 yards passing to the
opponent's 42 Happy finished with 127
yards gained to Valley's 197. Cowboys
completed five out of twelve passes. Val-
ley completed four out of sixteen passes
I he home team punted eight times for a
23 yard punt average Valley had a 42
yard punt average Coach lair com-
mented. "Our kicking game hurt us."
Happy Cowboys face an open Friday
this week, but next week is Happy's
Homecoming when they battle Amherst

HOMECOMING Registration will be-
gin at I p m and the school program at 2

the Pep Rally and Crowning of the
Homecoming Queen after the Ex stu-
dents program

sarv Class of I960 and the Classes of
1915. 1925. 1935. 1945. 1955. 1965. 1975
and 1985

meeting to order. Eunice Cogburn read
the minutes of the previous meeting

coming Football game on September
27th. You may eat pie in the School
Cafeteria for 50c a slice or buy a whole
pie for 55.00. Everyone is urged to partic-
ipate and bring a pie to the supper. Tea
will be 25c Ex-student Association will
be serving coffee as usual.
Reports were given that the cheerlead-
ers sold more ads for the program than
had been sold in prev ious years.
Judy Thompson reported that plans
for purchasing travel bags for the Cow-
girls were not finalized
Mrs. Cogburn served refreshments.
Those present viewed the video film of
the game in which the Cowboys defeated
the Bovina Mustangs 35 to 0.'
THE FREE Enterprise taught by
Sherry McDowell had as their guest
speaker. Anna Mae McMamgal She
spoke on the depression era. its econom-
ics and lifestyles. Anna Mae had all the
seniors participating in games such as tin
can stilts, playing with a button on a
string, humming through a comb, push-
ing a ring. and looking at pictures through
a viewfinder.

new daughter. Sierra Dawn, born Sep-
tembr 7th at ll:35 p m. Sierra Dawn
weighed seven pounds and seven ounces
and measured twenty one inches long
She joins a two year old brother. Jake

Reiews." a satire of printed mistakes
made through the years. Anna Mae
McMamgal presented ‘'Hollywood
Comes To Happy." an account of the
commercial filmed in Happy, Willie
Butler, program chairman, presented the

W El.L THIS weekend makes us real-
ize summer is about gone and all the nice
vegetables and fruits we raised this
summer, if you live at Vigo Park and
your garden didn't produce everything
some one else had something to send and
we all div ided and it is a great way to help,
and when one is puny they are remem-
bered w ith a cov ered dish or a full meal 1
know there are nice people everywhere
but God sure gave Vigo Park the greatest

last Friday Curtis and Vivian went back
and spent the night, came home late Sat-
urday Vivian was able to go to church

ROGER GERBER is in his third week
of radiation treatment at the Don Har-
rington Center in Amarillo.
IIIE NEW school year at Nazareth
began Sept 3 w ith the students attending
a Mass of the Holy Spirit in Holy Family
Church with Rev. Harold Waldow offi-
ciating. Flag raising ceremonies followed
at the Nazareth School with Saige Annen
and Matthew Kern portray ing Betsy Ross
and Uncle Sam Lather Harold gave the
opening prayer. Superintendent Mr
Mason, spoke words ol encouragement
to the students to try to do their best this
year, and the officers of the FHA also
participated in the program. We have a
total ol 236 pupils this year. 85 in High
School, 33 in Junior High and 188 Kin-
dergarten thru 6th grade.
THF'. ANNUAL I abor Day picnic was
held Monday Sept 2 beginning with a
parade through Nazareth A barbecue
dinner was served to a large number of
area residents at the Community Hall.
There were many games during the after-
noon for young and old. an auction and
horse races with hamburgers being sen ed
for several hours I he dance was held on
Saturday evening before I abor Day this
year with a large crowd attending Ihe
Catholic Daughters float won 530 for I st
place in the parade, the Post Office won
525 for 2nd place and the I egion Auxil-
iary won 520 for 3rd place Special
winners were the Nazareth School Band
being awarded 5100 for their perfor-
mance and the Amarillo Muleskinners
were awarded 530.00

WTSU Seeks Athletic Homecomers
WTSU West Texas State Universi-
ty's homecoming committee wants to
locate any former students who partici-
pated in the women's athletic programs
between the years 1965 and 1979. A spe-
cial dinner-reunion for these athletes has
been scheduled in the Buflalo Room of
the East Dining Hall on campus at 7
p m., October 12 (Homecoming
Weekend)
