Back home again in Indiana. The Abilene reunion is history,
mostly good. I had the privilege of meeting for the first time
Raymond and Lois Ince [CCA], Clarence Whitefield [DIV/
HQ], and Bill McCarthy [DIV/TR], a second generation new-
comer. Also we renewed acquaintances with Earl and Edythe
Nichols [CCA], Jerome, Betty, and Michael Grossman [CCB],
Audrey and Trish Hammell [CCB], Paul Hempfling [DIV/
TR], Nicholas Kepf [DIV/HQ]. As usual DIV/ARTY had the
largest group from our unit; Ed and Betty Hayes, Len and
Trudie Owen, Ray Sacharski, and Herb and Ginny Luzader.
This was a total of 20 for our unit.
Our unit was, in my brief absence, assigned six seats for the
Saturday night banquet. When I was able to return to the Unit
Reps' meeting and was told that we had six seats and would need
to find seats scattered out wherever we could find them in the
dinning room,
I requested Jim Feezel, who was presiding at the meeting, to
please come to our hospitality room and explain this to my group!
After some discussion Jim said he would find an answer and tell
me that night at the directors meeting. Jim told me at the meeting
he was able to have additional tables set up and we would have
two round tables as well as the original six assigned. The tables
were adjacent. I put reserved HQ Units on the three tables, that
Jim had pointed out as being ours.
Upon arrival at the banquet the six seat table's sign had been
removed, and replaced with 66AIB. The people seated there said
that's the way it was when we came in. Two from our unit, Ed and
Betty Hayes, had to go home early because of illness, and the rest
were able to locate seats at different tables. Something needs to be
done to inform all units that tables are assigned and changing such
assignments should be with the prior knowledge of the Unit Reps,
concerned. I understand that the accommodations at the next
reunion will be large enough to seat all registering.
Other than the aforementioned incident the reunion went well.
Our trip to the museum revealed that a good job had been done
completing the displays; my last viewing was about two weeks
before the grand opening in 2001. Some of the displays that we

had set up had minor changes, for the better, making use of
additional material that was and is being received.
One other problem that I had was that my camera and Ginny's
both decided to screw up and almost all of our pictures at the
museum and the hotel did not print. I would appreciate receiving
any pictures you took at the reunion, that you would like to have
in the Hellcat News. Please do not expect to get them back, as the
current policy is not to return the original prints.
Two pictures that would print of those I took are included
herewith. One was taken in the museum showing Tom Kelly
[DIV/ARTY] with the observation plane he flew. I am sure Tom
has not seen the photo in the museum as travel has been a big
problem for him in recent years. Tom, I hope this will come as a
pleasant surprise. The other shows two of the band members as
they performed at our banquet. The Hardin-Simmons Cowboy
band did an excellent job with the pieces played. They were even
better than John's "dumb blond" jokes. It's a good thing they
showed up!
In our hospitality room after the banquet we had our own enter-
tainment. Clarence Whitefield brought his harmonica. He sur-
prised us all by playing a large number of songs which we all
recognized from the war years. His renditions of them were
excellent and helped fill our evening with good memories and
fellowship. Len and Trudie Owen from Gulf Breeze, FL, had
good news that their home was intact. This word came Saturday
afternoon, ending a week of woriy about it.
This year once again I had the privilege of presenting the
Woman of the Year award. I can think of no one more qualified
than Anne Ault. She was the unanimous choice of the committee.
Ginny and I have known Anne ever since we became members of
the association in 1995.
Our trip to Abilene had a last minute change. We had planned
to stop and have lunch with Joyce Johnson [DIV/ARTY]. Joyce
called on Friday before we left and informed us that she had to be
at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota that day and would have to forgo
