Garland, which has some
40,000 students in 57 schools
and adds about 1,500 each
year, has approved a $110
million bond proposal.
This will ilow the district,
which serves Garland, Sachse
and Rowlett, to keep pace
with this growth, according to
District Superintendent Dr. Jill
Shugart.
Some 4,780 voters were for
the plan and 2,708 opposed
the package.
The election was called in
August after a study showed
continued growth in the area.
The GISD bond study
committee included $52.6
million for building a new high
school, a middle school and
Holidays Coloring

The Sachse Sentinel and
the Sachse Public Library are
sponsoring the second annual
Holiday Drawing Contest for
elementary school children.
Boys and girls, kindergarten
through fifth grade, who
either reside in Sachse or at-
tend school at Sewell Ele-
mentary or Luna Elementary
are eligible.
Cash prizes will be awarded
to each of two groups: kinder-
garten through second grade,
and third through fifth grade.
First prize in each age
group will be $25. Second
prize is $15, and third prize,
$10.
Entries must be the original
art work of the child and
should relate to Christmas or
Hanukkah.
They must be on 8 1/2" x 11"
copy or typing paper, or on 9"
x 12" manila paper. Only
pencils and crayons can be
used.
The child's name, telephone

must be on the back of the
drawing.
Deadline for turning in

two elementaries.
A contract is under
consideration on purchasing
land in Rowlett for the high
school, which will be one of
the top priorities.
Locations of the other
schools have not been
disclosed, but GISD officials
said that at least one of the
elementary schools will
probably be in Rowlett.
Additions and renovations of
present schools account for
about $36.8 million.
Computer hardware and
software will run $9.6 million.
Furniture and equipment are
set at $5 million.
Taxes should go up about
five cents for each of the next
three years starting in '93,
according to school officials.
Garland district voters have
never rejected a bond
proposal. Funds okayed in the
last bond election, passed in
'86, were depleted in
February '91.
Dr. Shugart said the district
will sell $35 million in bonds
early next year.
The plan states that bonds
will be issued for three years
and the district will repay the
debt over the next 20 years.
The district's tax rate is
$1.39 per $100 of property
value.
School and community
leaders drafted the Garland
proposal, and district ad-
ministrators made over 100
presentations, discussing the
plan at meetings of city
councils, chambers of
commerce and other
community groups.
