But oh !|for every unkind act and ench ungen-

feel and 1 know thy deep devotion ami thy love
will pardon all. Forgive my errors—all my
iknlto forgive, and love me still, although I wear
a prisoner's chains. ,
Vou. know that in the scheme which ha" re-
sulted in the death of most of my companions,
and which has made me a prisoner, that I was
actuated only .by the tenderest leclings of sym-
pathy and humanity. I had been led to be-
lieve, as had icy comrades, that it was the dai-
ly prayer and the lite-wish of the masses of
the slaves for freedom. That they were groan-
ing beneath the yoke of oppression, with no
hand to aid them, or point them to the light of
freedom. I knew how dear my own freedom
was to me ; and every sympathy of my heart
was aroused for theni. It had been represen-
ted to me and my i-omrades that when once the
Banner of Freedom :-honld be raised, that they
would (ioiik to it by thousands ; and that their
echoing ehouta of freedom would be borne by
the breeze to our ui- -:t Southern shore, to tell
of freedom there. 1 gave.heart and hand to a
work whi.-h I deemed a noble and a holy
cause. The resah has proved that we were
deceived ; that the masses of the slaves did not
wish for freedom. There waa no rallyiwj he-
rn eath <>ur ba,imr. We were left to meet the
conflict all alone, to dare and do, and ate.
Twelve of my comrades are sleeping now with
the daiiip mould over them, and five are in-
itiates ot thist' 'Tiridii walls. We havebeen de-
wived, but found our our error when too late.
Those '-'ho are do.fi died like brave men,
though mistaken. Those who still live will
not shame, I trait, tlicit comrades w"ho are gone.
If they, ton must die, I hope they will meet it
in a way that wiii prove them worthy of a bet-
ter f te Let not the world judge them too
harshly for whatever wrong they have done,
for they but erred upon the side of sympathy
and love. ft was an error of their ju&£"«"*<'>

handed together Let the veil of charity be
dropped «ver (their errors. Remember them
only for their Spartan courage, and their fidel-
ity*© their lender.
What my may bo fate 1 know not,but whatever
it fl «y be, 1 trust that 1 may meet it as a brave
inaa should—unlliuehtngly. There is but one
thing thst makes me waver, and that is the
femembrauee of the tie* that bind me—the
thought* of my wile and child, of my father
and mother, brothers and sisters. Did not
i ties exist, I could meet my doom, wliat-
g&migcit be, without a murmur. But oh .'

heart iB wrung with u irony. I have no words
to tell my feelings when I think ot the terri-
ble grief then thin has brought on all who have
loved me fondly and so well. Thoughts
like the se crush down the spirit that would
sternly meet whatever loom might be in store
fot me without a murmur or a word. It is a
fearful ftrr-gb- of aeaphir and hope. Were 1

Wow would be a thunder-stroke of agony, L
oould meet it calmly, and my soul, with no sin
otr inteitiou upon its robes, could gaze un-
moved upon the peaflbl 1 or the tomb.
Thfr"%rong I have <lcne has not been one of
iitention. In this wi.rK, no man's blood rests
niton my hands. I had no part in the death
or those who wlre. killed at the Ferry. My
orders were to rtmove the arms from Cspt
Brown's house to the school-house, and to
guard them t-here. I obeyed orders to the vcrv
letter. I was anxi' to know what was the
cause of the firing a Vie Ferry; and as quick
as. I could go, without, violating the orders I re-
ceived, I hurried on ro learn. I found my
br ve comrades ;;urr..iinded—saw them tired
upon from every side. I contrived to draw
the fire-tf a ;nrt ..f tln ir opponents upor. my-
self, and succeeded. i tried my best to discov-
er some means ft save them, but I could not.
I left them with t l.^avy heart. It was the
esddeat day of my life. Those who fell there
were more than win trades*—they were broth-
ers.
Whatever may be my fate, I trust that you
will bear it with fortitude and submission.
We all must die, and a brave man dies but once.
Should such be my fate, then you must be tor
my child its guard and guide. Teach him to
lore the memory of his father. Teach him to
love and worship God. John E. Cook.
a year ago, that
removing the body
from the Invalides to the
__ Denis, and of establishing
there the future burying-place of the Bona-
parte dynasty, mo®t people gave little credit
to the report. The Legitimists, however, were
furious at the mere mention of such a desecra-
tion of the sacred cathedral; the Orleanists
Were doubly furious, because a Bonaparte
would not only be a desecration in the royal
burying-place, but because the idea and the
work of Louis Phillippc at the Invalides were
to be dif-reirarded and destroyed; the Republi-
cans laughed, and the Bonapartists shook Itheir
heads in silence. What was a year ago but a
conjecture, has become to-day a certainty.
The gorgeous crypt of the Inval'des, which
cost nearly two million dollars, the immense
monolith ol porphyry and the sarcophagus ot
the same costly atone, destined to nolo the re-
mains ot the exile of St. Helena, all these are
to be carried piece by piece to bt. Denis, and
there re-erected in the. transept ohurch conse-
crated to the liourbons, and the Orleans Work-
men have been engaged for more than a year
in this old cathedral but they were supposed
to be employed simply in its restoration. It
now appear-', however, that all the rich tombs
ot the ignoble corners in which they have been
it -wed aw:iy for eentur'e^ in the basement of
the ehtirch, «re to be placed on the floor above.

Duke of Rei(jb3wdt) are to occupy the tran
sept j Napoleon I. will occupy a magnificent
tomb^-eonstructed from the materials at the
lavaiides, under the left branch of the tran-
sept, and apart from the re:?t; the Bourbons
and all those already buried in the bisentent
will be plaecd in the side chapels of the nave
and the choir, in a position infinitely more ap-
propriate than that thr-v now occupy, for there
is cot a grocer at Paris of moderate wealth
who does not bury himself m re grandly than
are these ancient monarchs and seignors.
Beeciikr on Free Nkukoks —How are the
free colored people treated at the North ? Thoy
are almost without education, with but little
sympathy for ignorance They arc refused the
common rights of citizenship which the whites
eni >y. They cannot even ride in the car? of
our city railroads. They are snuffed at in the
house oi Ood, or '..derated with ill-disguised
disgust. Can the black man be a mason in
New York '( Let him be employed as a jour-
neyman, and every Irish lover of liberty that
eariies the hod or trowel would leave at once,
or compel him to leave. Can the black man be
a carpenter? There is scarcely a carpenter
shop in New York, in which a journeyman
would continue to work, if a black man was
employed in it. Can the black man engage in
the common industries of lile '! There lsscarce-
ly one in which he can engage. He ia crowd-
ed down, down, down, through the most me-
nial callings, to the bottom of society. We tax
them, and then refuse to allow their children
to to onr public schools. \\ e tax them, and
then refuse to sit by them in God's house. We
heap upon them moral obloquy more attrocious
than that which the master heaps upon the
slave. And, notwithstanding ail tla3, we lift
ourselves up to talk to the Southern people a-
bout the rights and lbei tir.s ot thehuman soul,
and especially the African soul.

The stomach is a very important organ in man's
economy, as upon it depends the success and all the
advantages derived from the administration of inter-

Sunday Nioitt Sparking.—Tho following
incident, not put down in the ballad ot Spark-
ing Sunday Night, took place in a western
Tillage, of New tork:
A younc gentleman residing in this vicinity,
• week or two since, met with an unpleasant
adventure while leaving the house of his dvlci-
nea, where he had been engaged in that very
pleasant occupation, yelept "sparking." The
joang man waa bowed oat some time in the
"wee una" hoars, bat through the darkness
cf the morning, or from the intoxication of
th« parting kiss, he beoame bewildered, strayed
from the path; and brought up some distance
from the Louse, by stepping into an open well,
Mar twelve feet in depth, walled up by a hol-
low tree, which was used for Watering cattle.
There, was about four feet of water in the well,
where EL is look lews Lothairia had to remain till
"broad day-light," as he was unable to get out
or make himself heard, so as to bring assis-
tacnc.—The victimised lover is the son of a
Baptist e'ergyman ; but he says his sentiments
will be decidedly adverse to tiaptism by immer-
sion.
Washington, Dec. 26.—In the house, the
irregular discussion of the slavery and kindred
quettions with whifeih the day opened, was con-
tinued some time alter the last message was
