will deliver a sermon at the Court
House to-morrow at 11 a. m.
At it Agaiv.—On Sunday night
last, during divine service at the
church at Round Rock, four horses
belonging to Mr. Roby, Craven and
others were stolen away by some thief
nianifestedly without a conscience.—
The next morning one of the horses
was found near the grave yard, strip-
ped its Bg$|ng.r We, are told the
thief or thieves were deliberate in
their operations, picking the best ani-
mals to be had. Round Rock and vi-
cinity have repeatedly suffered from
the visits of these gjtidnight depreda-
tors and it behooves our citizens to be
vigilant. If j*ery 4«e will only be
prompt in giving aid in the suppres-
sion of crime, it will .only be a ques
tion of brief time until one by one
these cuists to the country will bo
cleaned out. With desperate men,
. like measures must be resorted to.
Salt.—R. Sansom has just receiv-
ed a few sacks salt whieh he is retail*
ing at as reasonable rates as possible
--just as he does everything he has
to dispose oL H« has a nice baggy
and admirable span of horses that can
be purchased at a bargain by any one
in need of the same.

seated.

They have ordered one for Travis
c unty and one for Burnet county.—
'They are portable and can easily be
handled from farm to farm, to press
cotton, hay, fodder or anything you
please. As Williamson is going into
the cotton business more iargely this
season than ever before, it is probable
that many of these screws may be
needed, and if so, send your orders to
Rust ec Fisher, for you cannot favor a
more reliable or worthy firm in the
city.

Military Appointments.—Bvt.
Maj. Gen. Reynolds, in Special Or'
ders No. 135, snnounces the following
appointments for Lampasas county:
W. B. Pace, County Judge; James
W. England, Assessor and Collector;
John Markward, Treasurer; Marshal
Northington, County Commissioner.

Lampasas.—Alex. J. Northington
isjustupfrom Galveston, where he
has been for the past two weeks care-
fully selecting the largest stock of
merchandise ever ordered for Lampas-
as. Mr. N. bought this stock under
many advantages and will thus be en-
abled to sell them very low. He tells
us that the reports of yellow fever
below are wholly unfounded. He

the officers have been difigent in their
duties.
The case of A. J. H^yhurst, charg-
ed with the murder of John Nether
land in October, 1867, was suddenly
revived on Tnesday last. The rea-
ders of the Watchman will remem-
ber that during the early part of Oc-
tober, 18G7, John Netherland, resid-
ing a few miles above Georgetown, on
the North Gabriel, was found murdert
fcd in the woods a short distance from
his home, near to the spot,, where his
horse was hobbled, and was obviously
shot while in the act of getting his
horse, by some assassin, who from the
signs appeared to have been in wait
for him, At the time suspicion fell
upon A. J. Hayhurst. A warrant for
his arrest was promptly issued, but he
disappeared from the country. On
Monday evening last, he appeared in
the neighborhood or Maben's corral
on Berry's Creek. Upon this being
known, Mr. William Mullen, with
proper warrant, together with Mr. W.
J. Stanley, and several other citizens
went for the purpose of his arrest and
Came suddenly upon his camp where
he was backed by some seven or eight
fierce, tiger Icoking men, who imme-

the way of side-walks than seems to
be his share. We notice that he is
still at it, and there is no telling when
he will stop. He is entitled to a vote
of thanks. D. Love has also caught
the improvement fever and has made
a very good walfc in^rsafeof his store.
We heard anodhss merohant remark
$hat he would be at it shortly. There
*s a wide field for improvement, and
)t would look well for all to lend a
band.
, MO" S. J. Davidson tells us that
through our Brand Supplement, he
has been enabled to reoover four head

tance, and would otherwise never ksvs
been heard of. This is only one of
ihe many instances we know of, and
fvery stock man should avail httnsslf
of its advantages.

msnt is town on Wednssday occasion •
sd by the absconding of Dayhurst,
who deliberately rode away on a horse
hitehed near at hand for his conve-
nience.
ANOTHER SENTENCE.
Although the influence of money
and of friends, we sec from the Aus«
tin Republican that Alonso Heotor,
Alias Foley Hector, " who was tried
by a military commission, At Austin,
for the murder of Riehard B. Doug*
lass, on Onion creek, Tsavis county,
has been found guilty of murder in
the seoond degree, and sentenced to
ten years imprisonment in the Peni-
tentiary. Gen. Reynolds has approv
ed the sentence, and he will be sent to
Huntsville under the proper guard,
where he will be turned over to the
Supcrinteiidcnt of that institution."
Hector may be an exemplary young
man, but this action evinces the fact
that there is punishment for some of-
fendors of the law. Even if this
protection does not reach the unfortu-
nate overridden county of Williamson,
it is a consolation to a law abiding
citizen to know that its supremacy is
upheld in some quarters. Our coun*
ty is teeming with crime, and we fear
the end is not yet. Officers evade
their duty, and citizens who would do
justice to what is required of them are
thereby deterred. What is the use
of taxation if there is no protection ?
What of a court that is wanting in
the ballance, and a public in whom
the criminal finds an apology ? We
have always been staunch in uphold
ing and defending our county from
defamation but on the other hand as
an impartial journalist we must speak
of the lights before us.
8^, Owing to the indisposition of
editor jr., and sickness of our helps,
the Watchman is.somewhat short of
its usual variety of matter and other*
wise deficient to our liking. But be-
fore the end of the preset year we
are determined to make considerable
amends and give our readers a Watch -
man in fact. Our motto has always
been onicard, and if true diligence
will accomplish an end, success is
ours.
OBITUARY
Died June 7th, 1869, at his resi-
dence, in Georgetown, Texas, Dr.
Charles W. Lewis, in the 50th year
of his age.
Dr Lewis was a native of Virginia.
He located at Georgetown more than
15 years ago, and here married.
He was not only an able and sue.
cesaful physician, but a man of un.
common scientific and literary attains
ments. In his social relations he was
kind and charitable.
For the last several years of his
life he was a professed and exemplary
christian. His trust in God and the
Savior sustained him in his severe and
protracted illness. He knew that his
departure was at hand, and prepared
for the summons. His last wortls
were expressive of resignation to the
will of his God and Savior.
His wife and adopted son survive
him, may that son never forget his
counsels.
