mother's vrhereabouts
In (juile a lengthy article, Mr. D. K. Roberts makes a very serious charge against the Democracy
of Grayson County and the Commissioners Court of Grayson County. While tlie charge is indirect, it
is one that should, and will be properly resented by the Democratic voters of this County. He says, "I
am very bitterly opposed to the manner in which he (Craig) got the office. As to how Mr. Crai£ got
the appointment has riever been clear to me, and I believe I am safe in saying that it has never been
clear to any one else in Grayson County, except to Mr. Craig and a few of the click of my father's po-
litical enemies, who helped to put him in." "
. This, so far, is the only charge that is being made against me by my opponent and his friends.
That they do not like the way I got the office.
When Sheriff Roberts died, October 8th, I was a very sick man and had not been out of bed for
several days and was not out until after I had received the appointment, therefore, I took no part what
ever in the proceedings. Upon the death of the Sheriff, the County Democratic Chairman called the
County Demdcratic Executive Committee to meet oh the I 1 th day of October, 1918, and 55 of the 59
members were present or represented. On the second ballot I received 32 of the 55 votes and Judge
B. U Jones who had nominated Mr. Ran Roberts and who urged his nomination by the Cofnmittee,
after I had received a majority of the votes, movecj that my nomination be made unanimous. Having
been duly nominated by the Executive Committee, who are the representatives of the people, the Com-
missioners Court then appointed me as Sheriff of Grayson County. My name was placed on the official
ballot along with the other Democratic nominees, and I was duly elected by the people. As I obtained
the office in the only legal way in which it could be obtained, then why should I or at\y one else be so
severely criticised for same? t % '• 4 l«
1 * ^ v
Mr. Roberts says "If the good people of Grayson County feel that this bunch was justified in
doing what they have done, I want you to elect Mr. Craig for what he calls 'Second Tcrm'i if not I
want you to vote for Mr. A. B. Parton." Now, I believe the County Democratic Executive Commit-
tee and the Commissioners Court did what they thought was for the best interest of the County, and
feel sure that their ac tion and the manner in which the Sheriff's Office has been conducted by me will
meet with the approval of practically all the law abiding citizens of this County.
As to the charge that I have never paid back any campaign money to Mrs. Roberts, I will state
that I am certainly surprised as no such request was ever made of me. As is well known, two of Mr.
Roberts' deputies were applicants for the appointment and worked hard to obtain same. A letter
signed by Mrs. Roberts was read to the Executive Committee recjuestin^ that Mr. Ran Roberts be ap-
pointed as iSheriff. The committee being representatives of the people, and believing that the office
belonged to the people, acted on their own judgment and appointed me. And, as I stated, it never
occurred to me that the very people who did everything in their power to get that appointment for an-
other, would expect compensation from me. This is not natural.
As the appointment was given tci me on my reputation as a peace officer, I have worked hard to
maintain that reputation. I havq done my duty without fear or favor and will continue to do so. I
have been very busy in looking after the duti«s of the Sheriff's office and have not been playing poli-
tics any, and have not met as.many of the voters as I would like to, but I assure you that I will •ap-
preciate the support of the good law abiding citizens of this County, and feel perfectly confident of
the result. • - .
