Notes

Additional historic notes: The construction of the Elephant Butte Dam began in 1911 and was completed in 1916. At the time, the dam was the biggest reclamation project in the United States of America. The dam is 301 feet high and 1674 feet across and over 618,785 cubic yards of concrete were used to build the dam. The dam itself is located near the city of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and is on the Rio Grande River. The name Elephant Butte refers to the volcanic core which now rest in the middle of the reservoir which was created by the dam. That reservoir is called the Elephant Butte Reservoir. From the 1915 El Paso City Directory: H W Broaddus, G R LeBaron, real estate, loans, insurance, valley lands, surety bonds, sole agents Santo Tomas Farms Co, 209-10 First Natl Bank bldg, phone 1558.

Text of correspondence: "Dear F & M: We've been up in N. Mexico taking photos of the big dam. This is the Governments biggest project. When the dam is full it will make a lake 40 miles long and will irrigate 200,000 acres of arid land. The dam is solid concrete. Notice the size of the men under the derrick in the circle. Walter"

Additional text at left of correspondence: "The dam is 100 feet deeper than shown here, and is not yet finished on top."
