We weighed anchor 011 the 2tth of March,
and set sail on the same day from Liverpool,
bound for New Orleans. The wind was favor-
able, and the passengers seemed happy ¡11 an-
ticipation of a pleasant and prosperous voyage.
TI10 wind continued favorable for us two or
three days, until we were safely out from the
channel, which is most dreaded kv seamen.—
Nothing transpired after ihj" with" of note
for some days, when we experienced n very
heavy gale from the south-west, which lasted
nearly two weeks; the ship being loaded very
deep with iron, anil that being all in the lower
xhibition hold, caused hw to roll very badly; indeed,
some times it was impossible to get about the
deck with .safety. After this we were highly
favored, not having to reef topsails again.
The passengers were all in good health and
spirits except the Germans, thirteen of whom
died during the passage. Of these the most
ivere children, all, I think, except three or four.
There were lllteen deathsduring the passage in
all, the other two being Irish. On llie 3d, in-
stant, we made land about 2 a. m., and ran
down and passed the light house on the llole-
in-tlie-Wall about 7 v. >1. with a strong breeze
from the south-east. This we passed safely,
and made Stirrup Key to the leward at half-
past ten. At twelve they were still visible.
As soon as tho captain left, six of tho crew,
who still remained on the ship, got ready the
longboat, into which several of the passengers
jumped Indiscriminately. I never saw any-
thing in my life so fearful. Women and men
jumped overboard from the after part of tho
vessel near where the boat lav, and many
were drowned. One of the crew, who was in
the longboat, was compelled, with a hatchet,
to keep ofl' the passengers who were crowding
into the boat, and who, if allowed to enter It,
would undoubtedly have sunk it. We cut our
boat lose ft'om the vessel, rigged a sort of a
<iiil, and ran before tho wind. Tho longboat
followed Immediately, and we kept company
for a short distance, when we separated, but
she was still in sight. We saw the longboat
picked up between two and three hours after
-he lestt the vessel. About two hours later
wo were picked up by tho Reuben Carver
Captain Cobb I have only to say that wo re-
ceived every kindness and attention that the
captain, his wife, and crew, could render us.
Tho N. Y. Evening Post think# there is rea-
son to hopo that tbosu who camped in ono of
the boats were saved. Tho Post says:
Capt. Nlckorson, of the schooner Smith Tut-
tle, who arrived here 011 Sunday from Hay
Port, Florida, informs us that 011' the previous
Wednesday, when about ono hundred miles
north of Mantilla Reef, Bahamas, he was spo-
ken by a British bark from New Orleans, bound
to Liverpool, with cotton, who reported hav-
ing picked up on the previous day twcnly-Hve
passengers of an American ship, and wished
Capt. Nickerson to take them on board. Ow-
ing, however, to the tatter's vessel being oí
small tonnage, with a verv short supply of wa-
ter anil provisions, and filled with a large cargo
of timber, he could not take them. The bark
also reported that she had previously spoken a
brig who had declined taking them oft'.
Of the rescued passengers not more than
three or four were women, and these Hung

1 his to a great many persons is a dréadfbl
word; at Its mention terrible' visions ul' worth-
less bank-note, broken merchants, arm wo-bc-
gone speculators, haunt the imagination. Many
men, possessed of tolerable sense, denounce
any plan for specie representation; because,
forsooth, tho crazy operations which led to ruin
and repudiation in some States, have been the
cause id loss to theui. And so, without any
discrimination whatever, they wildly rush to
thu opposite extreme, thinking that there alone
is safety.
Texas incorporated in her constitution a
clause prohibitory of all banking. It is reason-
able to suppose, thst in doing tin's, liar people
were iiilluenced tuoro by the abuses they had
observed, and the ends which followed from
the old banking systems, than fropi any well-
founded belief that no safe plan could be de-
vised accompanied by all thu acknowledged
advantages, and freo from any of the risks —
of the afternoon, and at live, as was our usual
custom, we got supper. This night, however,
the starboard watch wore engaged in shorten-
ing sail. It was my watch below from six to
eight, though I spent t!iu most of it 011 deck.—
T do not remember seeing the passengers more
cheerful than they were this evening. I con-!

lieoiile of Texas lui now convinced,.! !'tlv« prac-
ticability of such a system, that thoy would
to a man be in fnvor of su ill a chango in the
constitution; na would admit of its practical
operation. The so called "Free Banking" sys-
tem, if rightly guarded, is as we think ono en-
tirely free from all objections which could be
urged by the most bitter opponents of banks,
as generally understood. This system is sim-
ple, and easily made plain to the'weakest un-
derstandings; and herein consists its beauty.—
Suppose a company of men wished to engage
in this business; a basis for their issues must
first be had; if not, gold and silver, it must bo
such a representation as could at any timo be
Immediately converted into specie.
Now, according to the system of which wo
speak as there can not lie one dollar issued
over the amount of capital invested; it is plain
that the best basis for the company would
bo one, that while perfectly secured and con-
vertible, would at tlie same time be drawing
interest. 'I he restrictions as to over issues
would in fact demand this; for this restriction
takes away from the company till chanco of
profit upon over ¡-sues. They would then
allowing as they did, all kinds of
ml
estate, city property, 4c., as their bates, and
not requiring sufficient pledges lor good Mb.
But the system we are in flivor of, i> liable to
none of these objections, whilo It carries With
It all the advantages of any.
