THE BROKEN SWORD OF
JUSTICE
Judge Marcus Kavanagh, of
• Chidago, in a forceful address
before a joint meeting of the
Texas Bar Association and the
Texas Frees Association recent
ly said:
"In England when a man con
aiders killing another he knows
that within five or six weeks he
will probably walk on the gal-
lows to die for his crime. In A-
merica, he knows that the chan
ces are six to one that he will
never be arrested, twelve to one
he will not be convicted, and
2 110 to one that if convicted, he
• will not die for the crime. In
Germany the number of con-
victions are 95 per cent, in the
United States it is but 1.3 per
t. speedy 1 justice is the legal
cent. The sword has-been
struck from the hand of justice
all that remains is a wabbly
and inefficient scale. We must
mend the sword and restore it
to her hand by enforcement of
all the laws—the big laws and
• the little laws for all alike."
The greatest deferrent to
lege student is the less difficulty he
has in learning to stroll gracefully
across a 80-foot wire. Superior men-
tality helps him to co-ordinate his
muscles and enables him to replace
useless, false movements with skilled
ones more quickly.
This evidence was obtained when
fifty-six students at the University
of Denver volunteered to learn to
walk across a tight wire three times
in succession without falling. The
experiments, which shed light on
the process of learning a complex
physical activity, were made by
Granville B. Johnson, director of
physical education at the univer-
sity.
Learning to balance in mid-air
is easier when fear can be elimi-
nated, according to a report of the
experiments just made. In tests
"conducted last year, volunteers who
knew nothing about the tight rope
required fifty trials before they
could successfully cross a bucking
wire suspended six feet from the
gymnasium mat. But this year,
with a wire only three feet from the
ground a new set of amateurs re-
quired only thirty-eight trials.

New Saltpeter Process
A German scientist, Prof. K. A.
Hofman, of the University of
Charlottenburg, has discovered a
method of making saltpeter with-
out the use of much electricity and
extremely high temperatures, says
the Pathfinder Magazine. In the
new process ammonia gas, which
can easily be made from water and
from nitrogen taken from the air,
is mixed with air and passed
through a mixture of caustic soda
and chalk with burnt clay to which
a small quantity of carbonate of
copper or nickel has been added.
The reaction takes place rapidly at
temperatures of about 750 degrees
Fahrenheit. The new method of
making saltpeter is of commercial
importance because saltpeter is now
widely used as a fertiliser.
Locusts Invade Honduras
While locusts as pests have been
the subject of many fiction as well
as true stories, Spanish Honduras
reports a real plague. Billions of
these winged pests have flocked
over Utilla island there until at
times they were said to be several
feet in thickness on the ground.
They terrified the natives for a
time
Gets Photo of Robbers
A camera has been invented for
bank tellers which flashlights a
photo of the holdup gang while its
members are operating. The de-
vice works either by pressure of a
secret button, during working
hours, or from an automatic “trip”
at night, and, after making the film
record, retreats into a steel cabinet
which locks.
Electricity Fights Moths
Live electric wires strung
through the trees are latest means
of fighting the destructive codling
moths that infest the orchards and
rose gardens of the Northwest, ac-
cording to Popular Science Month-
ly. Operating as little as five min-
utes a day, they serve to keep off
the pests.
