52nd Annual Vital Statistics Conference 1uUua(On December 3-5, 2006, vital statistics
partners from around the state gathered at
the Renaissance Hotel in Austin for the 52nd
Annual Vital Statistics Conference.
Participants could choose from more than 40
sessions with topics ranging from electronic
death registration to fraud detection and
prevention. Over 550 county and district
clerks, city secretaries, midwives, local health
department employees, justices of the peace,
and staff and administrators from hospitals,
birthing centers, and funeral homes
attended the three-day conference.The conference featured an Opening
Address by Senator Kirk Watson, who spoke
about leadership, including the qualities of an
effective leader. Former U.S. Surgeon
General Dr. Joycelyn Elders delivered the
Keynote Address and spoke about the
importance of vital statistics and the key
roles of statewide partners.An awards luncheon was held to recognize
vital statistics partners that achieved
excellence in vital registration. Forty-six local
registration offices, 51 hospitals/birthing
centers/midwives, and 15 funeral homes/
mortuary services met five criteria to achieve
the Five-Star award. (See page 2 for a
complete list of the 2006 Five-Star
Award recipients.)
Seventeen individuals were recognized for
meeting the requirements to be certified as
2006 Master Registrars. These individuals
completed a week-long class and presented a
seminar at a vital statistics conference or
developed a vital statistics project. (See page
4 for a complete list of the 2006 Master
Registrars.)
In addition, two special awards for
"Outstanding Partnership" were presented to
Broussard's Mortuary in Southeast Texas -
Golden Triangle and Porter Loring Mortuary in
San Antonio for their efforts in the implementa-
tion of the TER-Death Registration System.
