Behind them to the right is a wagon onto which cotton is being loaded. Many other people are in the field picking. A woman wearing a large sunbonnet and and a child are in the foreground on the left, putting cotton into a sack. In the background a man on a white horse is watching the work. Printed on the top of the image is the title, "Picking Cotton, Marshall, Texas." The words "Marshall, Texas" are printed in a different font and ink, making it possible that the image was a stock image that could be customized for different locations, but the message on the back says that the field was located near Marshall. Printed on the back to the left of the message section: "78.-17. I P C & N Co. Illustrated Postal Card Co. New York. Made in Germany." There is a postmark on the back, but the year is incomplete. The card is addressed to Mrs. C. A. Buholz, Appleton, Minnesota, and has been forwarded to Minneapolis.
