Martinique Disaster
Predicted Years ago.
Washington May 15. In con-
nection with the Martinique horror
the interesting stutetemeut is made
by seientists that loug ago nu earth-
qneke in the Lesser Antilles was
predicted to oectir about tilts time.
In 1S51 n easthquake devnstnted
parts of the West Indies and the
seieuttst of thut day basing their
enknlftticus ou snob records as they
possessed predicted thai the vol-
canoes on those islands would re-
main quiescent for about half a
century and then there would come
aitotber upheaval of the earth's
snrface. Government experts x-
pretfstd no surprise wheu the news
eauie of the deal rnctiou of St.
Pierre. One of thee in explain-
ing tbe destruction of the' Martini-
que town said :
"Since the days when tbe belief
we bekl that there lived under the
earth a big catfish wholesale the
inhabitants of sections of the globe
supertition with respect to seismic
disturbances has been more im-
Mrtat being that earthquakes nre
denosrted. ucd to volcnnio ex-
crieubiflc importaiifte. Accordings
of thin mtium! evil than the West
India islands including Martini-
que as the'surrouudiug waters are
thtt dumping ground for the sedi-
ment washed down the Mississippi
and Ohio rivers together with
ollrer bodies of water flowing into
thy gulf from other direction!?.
j "Other places known to geolofj-
4 ini iu susceptible to uurthquukes
from this cause are the lands near
tbe mould nf the Po where other
rivers empty great deposits of silt;
the bay of Bengal which is the re-
ceptacle t'or the wnshiug of the
Gauges trutl other rivers j the Yel-
low sea into which deposits are
itoide from llitt Vaugtse und the
month of the Amazon. Perhaps
Oih tenitory near the Mississippi
river and tlju Yullow seu is most
liable to earthquakes from over
loading. From scientific observa-
tions iu is learned that a large
majority of earthquakes nrarjqulta
of 1 Fife cau&e whtla only a few are
en used by volcanic ex p lesion."
In the absence therefore of de-
finite information to show the exact
cause of the earthquake at Marti-
triqoe experts here incline to the
theory of overloading. There is
however no question that the last
serious earthquake on Martinique
that whieh occurred in 1S51 wus ii
result ot the eruption of Mont
Pelee and the newspaper reports
seem to indicate that this one is
similar to that.
Characteristic.
Chicago News.
It was on the trnin betweeiv St.
Petersburg nnd Moscow.
'Ah' said the gentleman iu the
brown hat "I am glud to see that
there is another American on the
train."
'But how did yon know I wns
an Amencau?" queried the person
Addressed with n puzzled express-
ion. "Because when we slowed up at
at that freshly puinted' station you.
reached out. of the window and
touched it to see if the paint was
dry."
The carriage which was made by
the Uuited States Government es-
pecially for the use of Lafayette
during his visit to this country in
1S24 is owned in Chicago. It is a
quaint old ark hung on big
springs nnd wide straps and from
his lofty seat the old Frenchman
used to descend to the gronud by
steps with many foldings.
.
More fuss is now made about an
infraction of the civil serviGO Jaw
than abont its enforcement which
is a sign of progress. Philadel-
