The skinny on
Houston's up and
coming eateries
By Ashley McElyea Staff Writer
We have Taco Milagro, Teala's, and a Starbucks
across the street from a Starbucks. One of the
many advantages of attending law school at South
Texas is that we are located in a major metropo-
lis. Just as chic townhouses are popping up in
droves in Houston, so are establishments to wine,
dine and entertain their occupants. So enjoy your
city. When a new restaurant debuts in your neigh-
borhood, don't be afraid to put the Torts book
aside for a moment and check it out.
Mak Chin's 1511 Shepherd Dr.
Mak Chin's is a brand-new offering inside the
loop, serving Pan-Asian cuisine in a trendy, retro
atmosphere. With its counter-service casualness
and delightfully fresh Asian dishes, its concept
seems to be part Pei Wei, part Houston Heights'
hotspot The Social.
Guests are free to order at the counter and
seat themselves in the non-smoking dining room,
or otherwise sit in the bar or lounge area for full
service. My flaneé (towed not only for company,
but also for The Man's Perspective) and I sat in
the bar. Drink specials consist of $5.00 "Mak.
Chin's Specialty Drinks" until 7 p.m. There is a
nice sampling of Asian-inspired cocktails to
choose from in addition to the expected variety.
We were impressed with our cocktails: the
margaritas are made with fresh lime juice, and
the peach bellinis are absolutely divine.
Unfortunately, there is no "combo number
seven" at Mak Chin's; the menu is structured a la
carte, so the final tally of appetizer, soup, fried
rice, and entrée can be hefty. We decided to forgo
the frills, but popular rumor is that the bacon-
wrapped egg rolls are out of this world.
I ordered the wok seared rice noodles with
chicken, which contains carrots, bean sprouts,
and Chinese broccoli, and can alternatively be
ordered with beef or shrimp. It was an enormous
portion, came served to me fresh out of the wok,
and was absolutely delicious. My flaneé decided
on the mango sweet and sour chicken, which
featured fresh mango pieces and a very tasty
sauce. The Man's Perspective: he was very
satisfied with the quality, but didn' t feel the portion
size was large enough. All in all, though, we were
both impressed with the food, and service was
excellent
If the Weather were kinder, or as long as the
peach bellinis woe kept coming, the patio looked
inviting. As mentioned, the designer of the lounge
and patio seems to have visited The Social and
performed a
copy-and-
paste on
aspects of
the décor—
such as the
red walls, art
deco patio
furniture,
retro lantern
lights, and
crystal
chandelier.

works there, and it works at Mak Chin's.
Would I return? If I were in the mood for this
type of cuisine, then certainly. If I were in the
area, though, I'd most likely put my blinker on
by default at new favorite Cyclone Anaya's,
located practically next door. It will be interesting
to see as time progresses if this place absorbs
some of the young, 20- to 30-something night-
out traffic from Cyclone's.
Bottom line: What's not to like? Love fresh
Asian cuisine, love retro-trendy, then you will love
Mak Chin's.

forgo the frills,

bacon-wrapped
