"Dean for a Day"
Makes Mark on South Texas
The 2005 Dean for a Day went
above and beyond the call of
duty during her tenure, not only did
she guide the school for a day but
she raised money for the students in
the process. Myra A.B. Wilson, a
2001 graduate from South Texas out-
bid her fellow alumni to become
"Dean for a Day." Every year the
alumni dinner features a silent auc-
tion with various prizes including the
coveted Dean for a Day job. On Feb-
ruary 23,2005, Dean Alfini was tem-
porarily retired while Dean Wilson took over.
"This is something I thought would be a lot of fun. I've wanted to do it
for a while. I was actually outbid last year," Wilson said. "So this year I planned
to bid high so I could have this experience." While Wilson was not handed
critical decisions during her stint as Dean she was given the keys to Dean Alfini's
office, led a staff meeting and coordinated programs for the students. Wilson
also branched out to other duties of a lawschool dean, fundraising. "Once I got
the job I realized it would be more than just fun, I wanted to do something for
the students," Wilson said.
Through coordinating a reception for her fellow classmates Wilson raised
more than $12,000 for current students at South Texas. More than 150 people
from the class of 2001 contributed to the fundraising effort. "This became a
class gift to the school," Wilson said. "We've all had many achievements and
it was great to be able to say thank you by giving back in this way." Wilson is
a pioneer in this unique fundraising turn, no previous Dean for the Day has
taken the time to bring money in. "What happened to me here as a student
made me want to give back to the school, they supported me then and I want to
support them now," Wilson said.
Wilson not only gave back to the students through fundraising but she
also facilitated the "Dress for Success" panel discussion which took place dur-
ing her tenure on February 23, 2005. Panelists included Shelby Hodge, the
Houston Chronicle society columnist; Patsy Fourticq, who has appeared sev-
eral times on Houston's Best Dressed list; Justice Eva Guzman, an alumni and
judge on the 14th District Court of Appeals; Dan Cogdell, a well-dressed alum;
Don Jordan, Board Chair at South Texas; along with "former" Dean Alfini.
"The whole experience was really great, I learned the other side of school,
an administrator has a tough job," Wilson said. "But overall I had great fun and
really renewed my passion for this law school. Everyone I've met has given me
great hope for the future of our institution."
While no other Dean for the Day has taken on the weighty task of
fundraising, Wilson's predecessors have all left their mark. C. David Towery
was Dean for the Day in 2000 where he presided
over the Founder's Day luncheon honoring Dean
Garland Walker. Thomas Pirtle and Richard
Laminack chose to share the Dean for the Day du-
ties in 2002, they presided over a faculty meeting
and tried their hand at teaching by taking over Pro-
fessor Steiner's torts class. The next Dean for the
Day will have their opportunity to sign up at the
upcoming annual alumni gala.
