People who happened Wbe withio
the vicinity of the city hall about 9
o'clock last night heard some of the
sweetest musip ever listened to. It
was the choir of ladies and gentleman
under the lead of Mrs. Rice Maxejr,
practicing old Southern war songs io
be sung at the ex-Confederate picnic
next week. This choir will sin Jlbree
songs—"The Homespun Dresl,''
/'Dixie" and "Tenting on „ the Old
Camp Ground." None of these may
he held up as brilliant e^amplea of
song literature; but for tunefulness
and inspiring sentiment they will
stand with the beet productions of
the world. As sang by tbo really fine
voices of the choir last night, the'sin-
gers being animated by personal sym-
pathy with the subject, tbeae *6ld
songs will catch the ear and hold the
attention of all who may be on the
picnic ground that day. r~i,
The words of these songs are famil-
iar to but few of the people of this
generation, but thirty.five years ago
they were heard in every Southern
home, and they will be treasured by
hlstoricéir societies and carried
through family traditions as long as
warm hearts beat in the Southland.

Oh, yes, I am a southern girl
the name,
And boast it with far greatar pride, than
glittering wealth or fame,
We envv not the northern girl, her robes of
beauty rare,
Though diamonds grace her snowy neck
and pearls bedeck her hair.
Caokus: Hurrah, Hurrtb,
For the sunny south so dear.
Three cheers for the homespun drew
The southern ladies wear.
The homespun drees is plain I know, my
hat's palmetto too,
But then it shows what southern girls, for
southern rights will do.
We send the bravest of our land to baUle
with the foe,
And we will lend a helping hand, we love,
the south you know.
Now northern girls are out of date, and since
Old Abe's blockade,
We southern girls can be content with goods
that's southern made.
We stnd our sweethearts to tbe war, but
dear girls, nev< r mind,
Your soldier lovo will never forget, the girl
